Fresh air, slow mornings, and somewhere for little legs to explore.

Weekend reminder: you don’t need elaborate plans to create meaningful memories. Sometimes a walk, snacks in a backpack, and a bit of nature is more than enough.

There is so much learning happening in play 🤩

At our Wellwoods Family Play session, little hands get busy dandelion painting, creating hapazome prints, exploring the woods, balancing on the slackline, rolling balls across our tarp parachute and excitedly spotting the very first apple blossom of the season.

These moments can look simple. But underneath the play, something much bigger is happening.

Young children are developing balance, coordination and core strength. They’re building confidence, communication skills, creativity and resilience. They’re learning to assess risk, solve problems, explore their senses, connect with others and make sense of the world around them.

And perhaps most importantly of all - they’re experiencing joy, curiosity and connection.

Play is never “just play.” It's how children learn best.

Outdoor play offers rich, sensory experiences that support healthy development in ways that worksheets and screens just cannot replicate. Every muddy puddle, balancing challenge, flower discovery and imaginative adventure helps lay foundations for lifelong learning and wellbeing.

We feel incredibly lucky to be part of these moments each week at Wellwoods 🌱

Wellwoods is possible thanks to the Outdoor Community Play Fund from Thrive Outdoors đź’š

🌿 Children's Mental Health and Stretched School Systems 🌿

Teachers aren't failing - the system is.

Teachers today are being asked to do more than ever before. Alongside delivering learning, many are supporting children with increasingly complex social, emotional and additional support needs, often while managing large class sizes and limited resources.

A teacher with 30+ children - many with unmet or unrecognised support needs - who is trying to maintain engagement, outcomes and standards, within an enclosed evironment designed for learnng through watching and listening...

…is a teacher who is structurally disadvantaged.

This isn’t about blame. It’s about recognising the reality facing schools and educators every day.

Many teachers are working incredibly hard to support children’s wellbeing, engagement and achievement, but doing so within systems that are under significant pressure.

What they need is:
âś” Access to high-quality training
âś” Approaches that support regulation alongside learning
âś” Resources and environments that meet diverse needs
âś” Time and space to build relationships
âś” Sustainable support that helps prevent burnout

This is one reason outdoor learning is an important part of the solution. When used well, it can support emotional regulation, increase engagement, create opportunities for movement and collaboration, and offer different pathways to success for children who may struggle in more traditional learning environments.

Teachers are already doing extraordinary work in challenging circumstances. The question is not how we ask them to do more. It’s how we create systems that better support them to succeed.

If you're caring for a young person with additional needs, you're carrying more than most people see.

Steady Ground isn’t therapy.
It’s not a course.
It’s not advice.

It’s space.

Sometimes space is what keeps you steady.

Please share this post to help us reach parents and carers who might need a little space.

OutLET began with a simple but powerful vision.

Our founder Jackie wanted to create a safe space where ALL children and young people could feel safe and connected in nature - to explore, and experience the outdoors in a way that supports wellbeing, growth and confidence.

That vision was shaped by lived experience, by years of working with young people facing adversity, and by seeing first-hand the transformative impact that nature can have when the right support is in place.

From one young person who was once 'written off' by others, to thousands of children, young people, families and communities discovering confidence, resilience and joy outdoors - the belief has always been the same:

Nature can change lives.

Ten years on, that vision continues to grow.

OutLET is still - and always will be - a space where people can feel they belong.

One of the things we love most about forest school is the way it brings people together across communities, organisations - and even continents!

It was a privilege to welcome learners from the USA to train with us on our most recent cohort, and to spend time sharing ideas, experiences and a shared passion for supporting children through nature-based learning.

Outdoor learning has an amazing way of creating connections - around campfires, on woodland trails and through conversations that continue long after the training course ends.

We're delighted to see the inspiration and learning travelling all the way back to Tahoe, and we can't wait to see how it grows in their work with children and families.

Thank you Daisy Trails Forest Preschool LLC for being part of our learning community đź’š

✨ Interested in beginning your own Forest School journey? Our next training cohort starts in September. Whether you're an educator, practitioner or simply passionate about outdoor learning, we'd love to welcome you✨

🌿 Volunteers Week 2026 💚

It's , and we want to take a moment to celebrate the incredible people who give their time, energy, skills and care to support OutLET.

From session volunteers helping children and families feel welcomed and supported outdoors, to our young volunteers growing in confidence and leadership, to our trustees helping guide and strengthen the organisation behind the scenes - our organisation simply would not be what it is without you.

Volunteering is about so much more than giving time.

It’s about relationships, connection and community. And most importantly, shared purpose.

Every encouraging conversation, every helping hand, every new idea, every fire lit, every every board meeting attended and every hour given helps us to create opportunities for children, young people and families to thrive through play, nature and connection.

To every volunteer, young volunteer and trustee who has been part of our journey - thank you đź’š

Behaviour is communication.

Children who feel safe, connected, regulated and understood are far more able to learn, cope and engage positively with the world around them.

Connection before correction đź’š

Last week’s Wild Time Play session involved battles, tactical planning and some very serious stick-based warfare ⚔️

And, as always, it was more than just 'play' - there was so much learning happening underneath it all.

Through imaginative play like this, children explore ideas about power, fairness, teamwork, rules, risk and relationships. They test boundaries, negotiate roles, solve problems, cooperate, disagree, adapt and make sense of the world around them.

One minute they were fierce warriors defending camp… the next they were negotiating alliances, checking everyone was included and helping each other over obstacles.

The value and importance of this kind of play is huge. It allows children to process ideas about the world that surrounds them, and to explore emotions and develop social skills in ways that feel natural and meaningful to them.

And most importantly, there was fun - the kind that comes from being fully immersed in play, imagination and adventure in the outdoors.
