At our AGM, we invited Wendy Johnstone, Partnerships Lead at Voluntary Action South Lanarkshire, to join our Chief Officer, Jennifer Howdle, for a conversation about the wider value of advice and what our AGM theme, Advice Opens Doors – to rights, justice and opportunity, means from a partnership and third sector perspective.

Her words are a lovely reminder that good advice starts with having somewhere you feel able to ask for help, somewhere you can talk through what's happening, be heard without judgement, and begin to understand your rights and options.

They also talked about the wider opportunities that can grow around our advice service, through volunteering, accredited training and learning, developing skills, and organisations working together to strengthen our community.

, and not only for the people who come to us for help.

Advice services help people understand their rights, challenge decisions, and find a way through difficult problems.

But an advice service can create opportunities too 🫶

It can give people a place to volunteer, build skills, grow in confidence and take steps towards employment. It can bring organisations together, build stronger partnerships and help find solutions to problems affecting our community.

At our AGM, Brian, our Team Leader of General and Community Services, sat down with Chris, one of our longstanding volunteer advisers, to talk about the difference he has seen advice make and what his years of volunteering have given him in return.

A few photos from our AGM on Friday. 💙

It was a chance to look back on another year of supporting people across our community and to recognise the staff, volunteers, trustees, partners and supporters who make that work possible.

3894 people supported in our local community, over 12,632 client contacts, achieving 1.53 million in financial gains for clients.

Helping people to understand their rights, have someone beside them when challenging a decision, keep their homes, find a way through a crisis, and gain skills, confidence and new opportunities through volunteering.

That’s why our theme this year was Advice Opens Doors-to rights, justice and opportunity.

A huge thank you to our staff, volunteers, trustees, partners and supporters who joined us and to everyone who has played a part in our work over the past year. 🫶

Today is the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, and this year’s focus is Safe Homes for All. 🏠

Tackling poverty isn’t only about how much money comes into a household. It’s also about choice, power, and whether everyone has the resources they need for a safe, adequate, and secure home.

We see every day how closely poverty and housing are connected.

For some people, it means struggling with rent or mortgage arrears and facing the possibility of losing their home. For others, it means living with damp, disrepair, poor insulation, or unsafe conditions because they don’t have the resources or options to change their circumstances.

This connects directly to the poverty premium: having less can mean paying more, while having fewer resources can make it harder to change the circumstances creating those extra costs.

As our Team Leader Brian explored in his recent article, these pressures can compound, one additional cost feeding another. 👇

💷 Poverty can cost more.

Throughout the week, we've looked at how advice can help people maximise their income and tackle some of the pressures that contribute to poverty.

But it's not only about what comes into a household; what people have to pay out matters too.
The poverty premium means people on lower incomes can face higher costs for essential goods and services.

For the last day of , Brian, our General & Community Services Team Leader, draws on his frontline experience and wider work as a socio-legal researcher and part-time PhD student to explore why poverty can cost more and what that means for people already struggling to make ends meet.

This Challenge Poverty Week, we've been talking about how advice fights poverty.
On 23 October, we'd like to show you what that looks like in our community, at our Annual General Meeting.

Under this year's theme, Advice Opens Doors to Rights, Justice and Opportunity, we'll share some of what we've seen, learned and achieved over the past year.

Our Advice Service helps people understand and exercise their rights. It can open the door to justice for someone facing court or struggling to navigate a complex system. And it can create opportunities, helping people build confidence, connections and pathways towards volunteering, learning and employment.

Sometimes that starts with securing an entitlement. Sometimes it's preventing someone from losing their home, helping them challenge a decision or giving them the support they need to find a way forward.

That's the wider impact of advice we want to talk about.

Members of the public are very welcome. If you live locally, have an interest in our work, or want to find out more about what Hamilton CAB does for your community, we'd love you to join us.

💚 Advice fights child poverty.

For Day 4 of , we're highlighting the role independent advice can play in tackling the financial pressures affecting families.

✨ A successful benefit claim can mean more money in the household budget for food, heating, clothing, and school costs.

✨ Dealing with debt can ease pressure on already stretched family finances and support family mental health.

✨ Helping someone resolve a housing problem can protect the stability and safety of a child's home.

We can't solve all of the causes of child poverty through advice. But we can continue working to ensure that independent advice helps families secure their rights, maximise their income, tackle debt, protect their homes and prevent problems from escalating.
And we can continue our commitment to bringing that support closer to families through our expanding school outreach, meeting parents where they already are.

💼 Fair work should pay the bills. And people also need a fair chance to get there.

For Day 3 of , the focus is Fair Work: work that provides security, flexibility, and wages that pay the bills.

Getting into work isn't always as simple as finding a vacancy, and for many people, there can be a lot of steps before employment feels possible.

If you’re already struggling financially, even getting to an interview can be difficult. Travel costs money. Suitable clothes for an interview or a new job cost money. And starting work can mean paying travel costs before that first wage arrives. When every pound in a household budget is already accounted for, they can become very real barriers.

Insecure housing, debt, caring responsibilities, low confidence, time away from work or rebuilding life after relocation can all create further barriers.

Advice can help people tackle some of those challenges, but our role in employability goes further.

Our supported volunteering programme provides another step forward, with opportunities across administration, reception, research, digital support and advice. Providing different opportunities to build confidence, workplace experience and valuable people and communication skills within a supportive environment.

Those progressing into advice roles also develop specialist legal and rights-based knowledge through structured training, leading to an SCQF Level 6 qualification.

People come to volunteering from many different starting points. For some it's about giving something back. For others, it can provide the skills, confidence, experience and connections that help open the door to future employment.

💙 Fair work matters. So does having a fair opportunity to get there.

⚡ Energy costs are a poverty issue.

For Day 2 of , we’re focusing on the pressure energy costs continue to place on people who are already struggling.

Our Safe and Warm Energy Adviser Scott sees first-hand how difficult it can be for households when energy takes up an increasingly large part of an already stretched budget.
There are things we can do to help, from looking at income maximisation and available support to dealing with energy debt and exploring your options.

As part of , we were pleased to welcome Alex Kerr MSP to Hamilton Citizens Advice Bureau this afternoon, taking the conversation on poverty from the frontline to our local MSP.

Alex met with our Chief Officer, Management Team, and Business Development Officer to hear about the issues we are seeing through our work with people across Hamilton and the surrounding communities.

It was an opportunity to share what our advisers see every day, the pressures people are facing, the barriers that can make it difficult to access support, and the difference that early, accessible advice can make.

Thank you to Alex for taking the time to visit, listen, and discuss the challenges facing people locally.
