"You may realise that someone is struggling with loneliness before they realise it themselves..."

Loneliness Awareness Week may have ended, but the loneliness epidemic is growing. While it's normal for any of us to experience the odd bout of loneliness, when it becomes chronic it can have the same impact on our health as smoking a pack of ci******es a day. And for a vulnerable elderly person with limited mobility, it can be devastating.

Here's a helpful article on how to spot and support loneliness in someone you know, whether a friend, family member, or neighbour. And if you'd like to take it one step further, please consider volunteering with us...Just an hour of your time a week can make a huge difference in the life of a lonely elderly person!

If you think someone you know is lonely, it can be hard to know what to do. Find out how you can support them and where else they can look for help.

LONELINESS AWARENESS WEEK

Please please share this post to help us spread the word and ease loneliness and isolation for more elderly people in our community 🙏

When I first started out as a volunteer companion for Care and Share Companionship, I had no idea first of all how easy it would be to make a difference in the life of an elderly person but also what a genuinely wonderful friendship would form between us. In just a couple of hours per week / fortnight, just going round for a cuppa and a blether, you can have a HUGE impact on the life of an elderly person who feels lonely or isolated.

In the words of my wonderful wee Friend:

"It's having something to look forward to, that's what I love. I remember when I used to not see anyone and now I have all this. I never would have thought that at this stage of my life I'd have all these wonderful people and all these wonderful things I get to do; it's incredible really."

This week is Loneliness Awareness Week. If ever you've thought about becoming a volunteer befriender, what possible time could be better than this of all weeks of the year to find out more about how you can get involved?

We had a great time this weekend celebrating Volunteer Week and The Big Lunch, with special thanks to Eden Project Communities for their very kind donation for yummy picnic lunch supplies! 🥪

It's this kind of joined up community initiative that reminds us we are stronger when we work together. ✨

A special shout out to the Ecology Centre in Kinghorn for offering such a sweet gathering space as a back up to wild and windy picnic weather. If anyone is looking for a super affordable yet charming place to meet with a group, give them a call! 🌱

And if you'd like to join our merry band of volunteers, then please give us a call too! 😊

❤️💜COME AND JOIN OUR AMAZING VOLUNTEER TEAM!🩷💙

Help reduce isolation in our community - PLEASE SHARE 🙏💕🙏💕🙏

We’re a tiny staff of two who are passionate about easing loneliness and making volunteering rewarding and enjoyable. From your first hello you’ll receive a warm welcome, ongoing support, and access to training opportunities. We carefully match volunteers with Friends to give each connection the best chance of flourishing. Travel expenses are reimbursed, and we’re happy to provide references if you later apply for jobs.

You’ll join a brilliant, like-minded community with regular get-togethers, events and activities. Here’s a flavour of what volunteers say:

"I could not have been matched with a more perfect person. She's amazing; I love it. She's made a huge difference to me. I always looked after my mum and dad; she's kind of filled that space."

"When I recommend CSC to people, I tell them it doesn’t take up a lot of time – a couple of hours a week – and there’s the difference you’re making to someone as well as the difference it’s making to you having a wee friend. You also get really good support."

"It has been amazing to work alongside you and witness the impact you make in easing loneliness and lifting spirits. You guys are awesome! I'm so grateful to have the opportunity to volunteer with you both!"

If you have a couple of hours a week or fortnight to spare, we’d love to hear from you. Contact Kim via the details in our bio or comment on this post to find out more.

❤️COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT! ❤️

Thank you Cllr Carol Lindsay for shining a community spotlight on Care and Share Companionship! It's very fitting in Volunteers' Week to have yet another wonderful acknowledgement of the difference made by our fabulous team of volunteers, whether through individual visits or helping us to put on social events to bring older people together in community.

And thank you to Yvonne Whitehill, our fantastic volunteer, for bringing Carol up to speed with our achievements 🙏

With just an hour or two a week / fortnight to spare or even just a bit of time here and there on a less regular basis, you could help us to reduce isolation and loneliness in even more elderly people.

If you want to know more about joining our friendly wee team of volunteers, we'd love to hear from you. Contact Kim via the contact details in the group bio or by commenting on this post 💕

🌟 Community Spotlight: Care & Share Companionship 🌟

Today I had the pleasure of meeting with Yvonne Whitehill from Care & Share Companionship to celebrate their recent success at the Fife Voluntary Action Awards, where they were named winners of the Social Inclusion Award.

Based in Kirkcaldy, Care & Share Companionship supports older people experiencing loneliness and social isolation through volunteer befriending, social activities and community connections. Their work helps people feel valued, included and connected within their local community.

This award is particularly impressive given that the charity operates with a staff team of just two people, supported by dedicated trustees and an amazing team of volunteers. During Volunteers’ Week, it is a fitting recognition of the difference they make every day across our communities.

Thank you, Yvonne, for taking the time to meet with me and for sharing the inspiring work being carried out by Care & Share Companionship. Congratulations to everyone involved on this well-deserved achievement.

To find out more about Care & Share Companionship, the services they provide, or opportunities to volunteer, visit www.careandsharecompanionship.org.

👏 Congratulations once again!

WILL I MAKE A DIFFERENCE?🤔

Once a year, we share some numbers with our volunteers to remind them what a huge difference they make by visiting their Friend or helping us put on events.

📌 An hour or two a week / fortnight can change the life of an isolated or lonely person.

📌 All you need to do is go round for a cuppa and a blether. Easy, right?

📌 Working full time / family commitments...? Why not ask about other ways you can help on a less regular basis?

We'd love to hear from you 🥰. Contact details for Kim in group bio.

PLEASE share this post to help us find more volunteers to add to our fabulous team so we can reduce isolation and loneliness for even more elderly people in our community 🙏🙏🙏

"It's wonderful when I wake up in the morning, knowing that I'm getting together with my volunteer. It gives me a reason to put my lipstick on."

It's easy to make a difference in the life of an elderly person by giving just an hour or two per week / fortnight to go round for a cuppa and a chat.

And 9 out of 10 volunteers tell us that they think they get at least as much out of volunteering do as the elderly person they are matched with.

🌟Small amount of time = huge difference🌟

Do you have a little bit of time to spare and want to make a difference? Contact Kim (email and phone no. in bio). We'd love to hear from you 🥰
