On 24 August, we celebrate Ukrainian Independence Day — an important day to honour Ukraine’s rich history, culture, language and traditions.

We stand with Ukrainian communities in Fife and across Scotland as they mark this special day. 💙💛

May this Independence Day bring hope, unity and strength, and may Ukraine have a future filled with peace, freedom and independence.

On 20 June, we mark World Refugee Day, a day to recognise the strength and courage of refugees around the world.

A refugee is someone who has had to leave their home and country because it is no longer safe for them to stay. This may be due to war, violence, persecution or natural disasters. Millions of people around the world have been forced to flee their homes and are looking for safety and a chance to rebuild their lives.

World Refugee Day is important because it reminds us that everyone deserves to live in safety, with dignity and hope for the future. It is also a chance to celebrate the valuable contributions refugees make to our communities. When given the opportunity, refugees bring skills, experience and new ideas, helping to strengthen local communities and economies.

We support refugees by helping them access essential services, education, employment opportunities and community connections. Together, we can build welcoming communities where everyone feels safe, supported and able to thrive.

🎊Volunteer Spotlight: Linda Nicolson🎊

“I’ve been with FIF a few years now and I am currently supporting the New Scots Gathering every Friday at the Mercat Centre. I am retired and widowed but with still lots to offer. I enjoy meeting new people from different cultural backgrounds, and I really enjoy the friends I have made through FIF at the Gatherings. I always like to see new faces there and it makes me happy to see everyone come together to become a part of the FIF community.”

“I have been volunteering with Fife International Forum for over a year. As a Ukrainian refugee myself, it means a lot to me to support the local community and share my skills and experience with others. I especially enjoy my work in the community in Leuchars, where I organise a variety of activities, from English games to gymnastics exercises. Seeing people come together, smile, and grow in confidence brings me great joy and satisfaction. Volunteering has become a very meaningful part of my life, and I am grateful to be able to give something back to the community that welcomed me.”

Eid al-Adha (“Festival of Sacrifice”) is celebrated by Muslims worldwide and honours the story of the Prophet Ibrahim (A.S). This celebration also marks the spiritual journey of Hajj, the Fifth Pillar of Islam.
