What can people’s experiences teach us about how Scotland’s justice and related services could work better?

Upside Voices brings together experiences and learning shared by people supported by Upside. They reflected on court, remand, prison, release and returning to the community and their accounts show how different services, decisions and personal circumstances can interact, where transitions can become more difficult and what helps people feel supported and able to move forward.

We are sharing this learning to encourage reflection, conversation and continued improvement across partners, while recognising the complex pressures facing services and staff throughout Scotland.

Over the coming week, we will explore six themes from Upside Voices ahead of publication of the full report:
• intervening earlier
• creating safety, clarity and trust
• understanding the consequences of remand
• maintaining continuity across services
• preparing properly for release
• showing what good throughcare can achieve

Each post will begin with the words of someone who took part and consider the practical learning their experience offers for creating a more consistent, responsive and supportive journey through the justice system.

Collaboration across support services depends on shared understanding and effective information flow. With around 40% of prison referrals to throughcare presenting as homeless, joined-up working is crucial to a positive outcome on release.

That issue was raised at the Scottish Parliament’s Criminal Justice Committee today. Deputy Convener David Linden asked what action the Scottish Government plans to take, with Cabinet Secretary for Justice Neil Gray pointing to the wider programme of public service reform set out in this week’s Programme for Government.

The experiences of staff and people supported by the Upside partnership shared by Sacro show what this needs to mean in practice: timely information sharing, clear responsibilities and services working together around each person before and after release.

This , we remember those lost to preventable early deaths. With proper support, treatment and awareness, we can help save lives.

Jason was referred to the Sacro AYE team following a breach of the peace. At the point of referral, he was experiencing problematic use of prescription medication, alcohol and cannabis, alongside poor mental health.
