Leith Theatre

Leith Theatre Leith Theatre Trust - working to preserve this iconic building. Contact us on 0131 629 0810 Works commenced in 1929 and it opened in 1932.

Leith Theatre was a gift from the people of Edinburgh to the people of Leith following the decision on 10th October 1920 to incorporate the Burgh of Leith into Edinburgh. The theatre suffered bomb damage in 1941 and closed until 1961. It closed again in 1988. Leith Theatre Trust was established in 2004 as a community trust to examine the options for the re-use of the theatre complex. Following an

extensive feasibility exercise, which demonstrated that there is a viable future for the theatre, the Council’s Leisure and Cultural Services Committee voted at the end of April 2012 to begin negotiations to grant the Trust a 5 year licence over the theatre in order to develop these ideas. The trust took on the lease at the beginning of 2016 and we are building the profile, number of events and fundraising to bring the main theatre back to its former glory. We've just about anchored ourselves after our incredible Birthday Open Day...πŸ‘

A huge thank you to everyone who came along to celebrate 94 years of Leith Theatre with us. It was brilliant to see so many people exploring the building, recounting memories and asking questions!

A special thank you to Holmes Miller for sharing more about the design journey, to our amazing volunteers for keeping everything running so smoothly and to Pilot Beer and Mademoiselle Macaron for providing the best birthday treats.

One of the most valuable parts of the day was hearing your thoughts and ideas for the future of Leith Theatre. Thank you to everyone who took the time to share them with us - we've been reading every single one!

This was just one step on the journey, and we're looking forward to sharing more with you as the project develops. Thanks again for being at the heart of it. πŸ’™

What a sunny joyous morning at Brown's of Leith with the Leith Chamber of Commerce.

Always good to be in room with our creative and business network, connecting and celebrating Leith.

The cherry on top was to listen and celebrate the amazing news that Leith has been shortlisted for UK Town of Culture 2028.

Thank you Theatres Trust, for your support over the past decade.

Today, Leith Theatre has been removed from Theatres Trust's Theatres At Risk Register, recognising the progress made towards securing the future of this building as a permanent cultural venue.

While this marks an important milestone, our work is far from over and we still have a long road ahead to bring this much-loved space back into full-time operation.

Being on the register has been instrumental in shining a spotlight on Leith Theatre, helping to galvanise support when it was needed most. Alongside invaluable advice and lifeline funding, Theatres Trust has been there at key moments and we're incredibly grateful for their ongoing partnership.

As our The National Lottery Heritage Fund Scotland-supported project progresses, we thank everyone who continues to support us on this journey.
