Leith Theatre

Leith Theatre Leith Theatre Trust - working to preserve this iconic building. Contact us on 0131 629 0810 Works commenced in 1929 and it opened in 1932.

Leith Theatre was a gift from the people of Edinburgh to the people of Leith following the decision on 10th October 1920 to incorporate the Burgh of Leith into Edinburgh. The theatre suffered bomb damage in 1941 and closed until 1961. It closed again in 1988. Leith Theatre Trust was established in 2004 as a community trust to examine the options for the re-use of the theatre complex. Following an

extensive feasibility exercise, which demonstrated that there is a viable future for the theatre, the Council’s Leisure and Cultural Services Committee voted at the end of April 2012 to begin negotiations to grant the Trust a 5 year licence over the theatre in order to develop these ideas. The trust took on the lease at the beginning of 2016 and we are building the profile, number of events and fundraising to bring the main theatre back to its former glory. We were so excited to have Lorne Primary School Year 7s in today as part of our partnership with Super Power Agency, who are helping young people to write their own story!

Warming up everyone’s imagination with a tour and lots of Leith Theatre chat.

Looking forward to seeing how their ideas develop 💙

Big shout out to our Chair, Bob Last, who’s just been named in The Herald Top 50 Most Powerful People in Scottish Arts and Culture

A well-earned nod to a lifetime in music, film and the wider creative industries, and the kind of thinking that’s helping to shape what Leith Theatre becomes next. Bob’s belief in the power of music, community and creativity runs through everything we’re building here, and across Leith more widely.

We’re lucky to have that experience in the room, especially as Leith is buzzing with energy right now. Leith Theatre’s a big part of that, and Bob is right at the heart of it.

Huge congratulations to Bob, and to all the other formidable champions of Scottish culture on the list.
