Teesdale and Weardale Search and Mountain Rescue Team

TWSMRT were called out this afternoon as part of a multi-agency response to assist with a patient in the Middleton-in-Teesdale area. Shortly after arrival the team were stood down.

Yesterday evening was medical practice for TWSMRT⛑️

Groups of team members were given a medical scenario and then let loose to manage the incident, treat the casualty and then package for an extraction.

A whole group debrief and discussion followed, comparing approaches and thinking about improvements 💭

The clocks went back today which means it’s also Mountain Rescue Awareness Day 2026 🏔️⛑️

This day promotes the voluntary search and rescue services provided by mountain and cave rescue teams across England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 and Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

If you’re heading for the hills (please not today with the current weather warnings in place!) ask yourself three questions:

🥾 Do I have the right gear?
⛈️ Do I know what the weather will be like?
🧭 Am I confident I have the knowledge and skills for the day ahead?

If you ever need Mountain Rescue:

📞 Call 999 (or text if you've set up EmergencySMS in advance)
🚔 Ask for “Police” then request “Mountain Rescue”
🗺️ Provide your location. If using a GPS device, make sure the location is your current one and refresh the location/app if needed.

Even moor training?

That's right, TWSMRT were conducting a full day training exercise out on the North Pennine moors yesterday.

With three missing contractors on the fells above Weardale, an extensive search was conducted to find them, treat them for any injuries, and then extract them safely.

Thank you to J W Bainbridge Ltd. for coming out and being involved in the exercise as casualties 🙏

Two callouts this afternoon for TWSMRT 🚨

The team were first called out to near Shotley Grove waterfall where a lady had fallen and sustained a lower leg injury 🦶

While finishing that job a second callout came in for another leg injury but this time near Gibson's Cave at Bowlees in Teesdale 🦵

We really do cover the whole of County Durham!

In case you missed it... TWSMRT were called out this afternoon to support the North East Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust and the Great North Air Ambulance Service with an injured off road motorbiker near Frosterley, Weardale 🤕

Team members helped package the casualty and transfer to GNAAS for rapid transportation to the RVI in Newcastle 🚁

A man was airlifted to hospital after falling from a motorbike near Broadwood Quarry in Frosterley.

Over the weekend was TWSMRT's annual medical training weekend, two days of intense medical training that consolidates all the other medical training team members do throughout the year ⛑️

The result? Our casualties get first class care thanks to all the voluntary hours team members put into their training ❤️‍🩹

They completed the half marathon to South Shields on Sunday and have raised valuable funds for the day to day running of the team 🙏
