🚴 INFORMATION FRIDAY 🚴

A Brief History of British Cycling – And What It Does Today

When people hear British Cycling, they often think of Olympic medals, the Tour de France, or competitive racing.

But British Cycling's story goes back much further than that.

British Cycling's roots can be traced back to 1878 with the formation of The Bicycle Union. In 1959, the National Cyclists' Union and the British League of Racing Cyclists merged to form the British Cycling Federation, which later became British Cycling.

Today, British Cycling supports cycling at every level,
including:
🚲 Local cycling clubs
🀝 Volunteers and officials
🚴 Ride Leaders and Breeze Champions
πŸ‘¨β€πŸ« Coaching, leadership and training opportunities
πŸ‘¦ Youth cycling opportunities
⭐ Accessible cycling through the Limitless programme
🌳 Recreational rides and community cycling
🏁 Regional and national events
πŸ“‹ Club governance and development
πŸ† Talent pathways for aspiring racers

Whether you're riding for fun, fitness, travel, volunteering, or competition, British Cycling works to support people at every stage of their cycling journey.

British Cycling is supported by thousands of members, volunteers, clubs and partners who help make cycling happen across Great Britain.

Here in the North East, a team of volunteers make up the British Cycling North East Board. Working alongside British Cycling's North East Sport Developer, clubs and volunteers, the Board helps support and develop cycling across our region.

Over the coming weeks, we'll be introducing some of the volunteers who help support cycling across the North East and sharing a little about the roles they undertake.

πŸ’¬ How did your cycling journey begin?

Was it through a local club, family rides, racing, mountain biking, BMX, commuting, or simply getting out for some fresh air? Tell us in the comments below. πŸ‘‡

The British Cycling North East Board would like to wish Victoria Eames, Sport Developer for the North East Region, all the very best as she leaves British Cycling to take up her dream role with British Athletics.

Although Victoria has only been with British Cycling for a short time, she has made a real impact across the North East. During her time here, she worked hard to connect with clubs, attended events and races across the region, and played a key role in bringing this page back to life with the support of a small team of dedicated volunteers.

We would like to thank Victoria for her enthusiasm, energy and commitment to cycling in the North East, and for helping to strengthen links within our cycling community.

While Victoria may be moving on, the work she helped to start will continue. This page will remain active, supported by our volunteer admin team and the North East Board, as we continue to celebrate and promote cycling across the region.

Whilst British Cycling recruits a new Sport Developer for the North East Region, any urgent enquiries can be directed to the British Cycling North East Board at [email protected].

Good luck, Victoria, in your new role with British Athletics. We wish you every success for the future. πŸš΄β€β™€οΈπŸ’™
