๐ŸŒŠโ˜€๏ธWhat a beautiful, sunny morning for our beach clean in Seaham earlier this week. We had an outstanding turn out of volunteers, who joined us to help keep our beaches and seas litter free ๐Ÿ’™

Although the beach looked fairly clean at first glance when we arrived, this brilliant team still managed to remove 20 BAGS of rubbish, plus 2 trolleys and a tyre from the beach - a powerful reminder of how much rubbish can be hidden in the environment and so much more remains in the ocean ๐Ÿ˜”

Every piece of litter we remove helps protect wildlife and the environment. A huge thank you to everyone involved! ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿฆ€

We're pleased to share our project evaluation film for the Coastal Grasslands Reconnected Project.

This film highlights the voices of project partners, key achievements, and examples of the community groups involved. Through these voices and scenes from across the project, it reflects on what we've accomplished together and the positive outcomes for nature and local communities.

Thank you to everyone who contributed their time, expertise, and support.

We're excited to share our new virtual map, created as part of the Coastal Grasslands Reconnected project!

Click the link below to explore an interactive map featuring pins that highlight each project site. Once you've selected a site, you can choose either the 25m or 100m view to explore the fenced areas in more detail. Each site includes information about the type of management and the wildlife that can be found there.

A huge thank you to local artist Juliet Percival for creating the map, and to Owen Weightman for designing the virtual tour.

โญ๏ธAn outstanding effort by young volunteers earlier this week to keep our beaches and seas litter-free! ๐ŸŒŠ

Thank you to the team of police cadets from Durham Constabulary, who joined us recently for an evening beach clean in Seaham. They did a fantastic job cleaning up the beach to reduce litter, protect wildlife, and create cleaner environments for everyone to enjoy. Great team work!

๐ŸŒŠThe rain didnโ€™t dampen the spirits of this keen group of volunteers, who joined us at Seaton Carew yesterday morning for a beach clean! ๐Ÿ’™

In total, 33 BAGS of litter were removed from the beach and sand dunes. Sadly, the majority of our haul was discarded litter left behind by visitors, including plastic bottles, BBQs, glass bottles, food packaging, nitrous oxide canisters and so many metal drinks cans. Itโ€™s always sad to see the variety of things that are discarded, which can harm local wildlife and pollute our oceans. If you're heading to the coast to enjoy the sunny weather over the next few days, please remember we share this beautiful coastline with our marine wildlife. Please take your rubbish home or put it in a bin!

A huge thank you to all the volunteers who helped yesterday, youโ€™ve certainly made a difference ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿฆ€ It was lovely to hear the little terns whilst working too!

Last November, our Durham Countryside Service and Volunteers sowed yellow rattle seed across our newly fenced sites at Blackhall Rocks as part of the Coastal Grasslands Reconnected Project.

It's great to see their hard work paying off, with large areas now covered in yellow rattle.

Often known as the "Meadow Maker", yellow rattle is a semi-parasitic plant that takes nutrients from surrounding grasses, helping to reduce their growth. This creates more space for wildflowers to establish and thrive.

We hope these cliff-top sites will continue to develop into colourful wildflower habitats, providing valuable homes for wildlife and beautiful places for visitors to enjoy.

๐ŸŒŠA huge thank you to these fantastic students from Durham University who joined us at Blast Beach in Seaham yesterday, for a beach clean!

They did a great job cleaning up the beach and getting 22 BAGS of litter (plus a trolley!) back up to the top of Noseโ€™s point to be removed. An outstanding team effort - youโ€™ve certainly made a difference ๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŸ๐Ÿฆ€ ๐Ÿฌ

๐ŸŒŠ Happy World Oceans Day! ๐ŸŒŠ

A huge THANK YOU to all our wonderful volunteers who help to keep our beaches and seas litter-free all year round! In the last year alone, we have removed over 2,484 bags of litter from the coast, with support from volunteers.

We marked with a beach clean at Crimdon beach on Sunday - not only to remove litter, but also to celebrate our beautiful coastline. What an amazing turnout we had, including Durham Wildlife Trust volunteers, families, local residents and even some four-legged friends lending a paw along the way! ๐Ÿพ

This fantastic group removed 28 BAGS of litter from the beach, dunes, and car park. Around half the UKโ€™s wildlife live in the sea - our volunteers work so hard to get all these items off our coast before they cause any further damage to the marine environment.

๐ŸŒŠ๐ŸŒฟHappy World Environment Day!

We spent the morning at Roker Beach with volunteers from Durham University and the Coast Sunderland team for a beach clean. Although the beach looked clean enough when we arrived, we managed to remove 5 BAGS of rubbish, including lots of small plastics, fishing line, food packaging and so many cigarette stubs! A powerful reminder of how much rubbish can be hidden in the environment, often going completely unnoticed - and so much more remains in the ocean ๐Ÿ˜”

Our volunteers work so hard keeping the beaches clean all year round, to protect wildlife and create a cleaner environment for everyone to enjoy. A HUGE thanks to everyone for you help๐Ÿฆ€๐ŸŸ If you're heading to the coast to enjoy the weather, please remember we share this beautiful shoreline with our coastal and marine wildlife.
