💙 Are you caring for a loved one? You don’t have to face it alone.

Nobody plans to become a carer. One day you’re a partner, child or friend. The next, you’re managing appointments, navigating hospitals and trying to support someone you love while keeping your own life together.

Join NO CHOICE CARING, a free, practical workshop for family carers and supporters, led by internationally recognised executive coach and behavioural psychologist Professor Maurice Duffy.

Drawing on his own experience as a full-time carer for his wife, who is living with a rare form of dementia, Professor Duffy shares honest stories, practical strategies and proven techniques to help you build resilience, cope with the challenges of caring and find hope in the unexpected.

📍 Venue: Health Innovation NENC, 1 Citygate, Gallowgate, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 4WH

📅 Tuesday 8 September
🕙 10:00am–12:30pm
🕜 1:30pm–4:00pm

The workshops are free to attend, but booking is essential.

A special thank you also to our friends from neighbouring MS Society groups who came along and supported the event.

🔬Research Opportunity

Does your menstrual cycle affect your Multiple Sclerosis (MS)? We want to find out why and when.

MS affects around three times more women than men, yet we still know very little about how hormonal changes throughout the menstrual cycle may influence MS symptoms.

Researchers at Northumbria University are recruiting volunteers for a study investigating how hormone fluctuations affect communication between the brain and muscles in people with MS.

This research is funded by the MS Society and supported by MS Together.

You may be eligible if you:
✅ Are aged 18–40
✅ Have a diagnosis of relapsing-remitting MS
✅ Are menstruating, using hormonal contraception, or male
✅ Have an Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) score of 5.5 or below

📍 What’s involved?
• 4 visits to our Newcastle laboratory (approximately 2.5 hours each)
• Questionnaires, physical assessments, safe brain and muscle tests, and a small blood sample
• Rest breaks provided throughout

💷 Participants will receive £150, plus up to £20 travel reimbursement.

Not eligible but know someone who might be? Please share this post — your support could help advance our understanding of MS and improve future care.

🍽️ Something delicious is coming… 👀

We’re cooking up something a little different for our MS community.

Think good food, relaxed vibes, plenty of laughs, and the chance to connect with familiar faces (and maybe make a few new friends too!).

This time, we’ll be gathering around the table for a proper Sunday lunch and enjoying some quality time together in a welcoming, supportive atmosphere.

💷To help make the event accessible, there will be a small subsidised contribution towards the meal, with the MS Society covering part of the cost.

If this sounds like your kind of Sunday, please leave a comment or get in touch with us to let us know you’re interested. We’d love you to join us!🧡

📬 Did you receive our Summer Newsletter?

We recently discovered that many of our supporters didn’t receive it due to changes in mailing permissions managed by the MS Society. To keep your personal information safe and comply with GDPR regulations, the MS Society asked members to renew their communication preferences. Unfortunately, many people either missed the message or didn’t opt in to receive updates by email or post.

If you didn’t receive our latest newsletter and would like to stay up to date with local news, events, fundraising activities, and support services, simply scan the QR code below or use the link provided to join our mailing list.

Join us for a local MS community event in Durham!
You may have heard a little about MS Help – a new way we’re bringing together our services, information and local support so it’s easier to find what you need, when you need it. This event is a chance to talk about what that means in practice, and most importantly, what it means for you and your community.

Come along to:
Hear a simple overview of MS Help and how to access support
Meet members of your local MS Society team
Connect with others in the MS community
Ask questions

The event takes place on Saturday 4 July, between 1.30pm and 4.30pm, at The Graham Sports Centre, Stockton Road, Durham DH1 3SE. We'll be providing refreshments throughout the afternoon and serving a sandwich buffet.
