National Cadets week.
Meet the staff.

WO2 Riley apart from being Yankee Company Sergeant Major is also instructing and assisting at Dumfries Sea Cadets.

Our Company Sergeant Major is WO2 Riley.

Why did you join the Sea Cadets?

I joined the Sea Cadets in 2015 having spent a couple of years as an instructor with the Air Cadets. I joined as I was asked to share my life experiences to their cadets. This later led to me joining the Sea Cadets with a view to forming a Royal Marines Cadet Detachment as I had served as a Royal Marines Commando. I formed the detachment within the Dumfries Sea Cadet Unit in 2017.

Why do you volunteer with the Sea Cadets?

I am in a privileged position of seeing cadets from all parts of the Country- Scotland, Ireland and the North East of England. I see cadets come from all walks of life, all manners of backgrounds and some from underprivileged lives. I see the cadets from the have and the have nots engaged on an equal playing field, I see them interact and make friends where in some cases they normally wouldn't or couldn't engage. I enjoy seeing young people come out of their shells, to grow in confidence, to learn discipline and respect, to respect authority. This impacts the youngsters in so many ways and it's good to see and I hope to see it for a good few years more.

What does your role involve?

My current role is the Company Sergeant Major (CSM) where my primary role is the welfare and progressive development of all the Senior Non Commissioned Officers. To be the primary point of call if staff can't get immediate help or advice for any issues they may have during their time within the Cadets.

🏃‍♂️💦 A huge well done to our cadets and adult volunteers at the Dumfries Half Marathon yesterday! 🏃‍♀️🏅

Our cadets and volunteers were out in force supporting the event marshals at the water stations to keep hundreds of runners hydrated and cheered on as they tackled the distance!

From setting up the stations, to handing out water to the runners, and making sure the course was cleaned up and tidy afterward, our cadets showed brilliant teamwork and enthusiasm throughout the day.

A massive thank you to the organisers for having us, and a huge congratulations to all the runners who crossed the finish line! 🎉👏

A Busy Weekend for Our Cadets! ⚓

Our cadets had an exceptionally busy weekend representing the unit and serving our local community.

⛴️Merchant Navy Commemorative Service

On Saturday , cadets attended the Merchant Navy commemorative service to pay tribute to current and past personnel serving in the Merchant.

🛩️ Dowding Day Memorial Service

The following day cadets also stepped up to support the organisers of the Dowding Day Memorial Service. From arriving early to help set up the event space, to collecting donations for worthy causes and escorting the ceremonial wreaths to the Dowding Memorial.

We could not be prouder of the respect, enthusiasm, and teamwork shown by all involved over the weekend, BZ! 👏💙

Our Commanding Officer, Sub Lieutenant Kayleigh Witts, is lacing up her running shoes to take on 13.1 miles in the Great Scottish Run on Sunday, 4th October!

Kayleigh’s journey with Dumfries Sea Cadets started nearly 12 years ago when she first walked through our doors as a 13-year-old cadet. Having stepped up as a staff member at 18, and taking over as Commanding Officer in February 2025, she has experienced firsthand how the unit builds confidence, teamwork, and leadership in young people across our local community.

Now, she’s tackling her first ever half marathon to raise the essential funds needed to help enhance our unit’s resources and unlock exciting training opportunities for our current cadets. Every single penny raised goes towards supporting our young people.

Let’s show S/Lt Witts some support as she trains through these final 7 weeks! ⚓️💙
