It's lovely to hear of the positive experiences and joy a cargo bike can bring. I Bike D&G have one just like this available for families to loan for using on the school run and other local journeys. Let us know if you're interested in loaning it, or would like to find out more. Walk Wheel Cycle Trust Scotland, I Bike Communities D&G, Dumfries and Galloway Council,

“We use our bikes for most local journeys now.”

When Elaine and her partner retired and moved to Forres, they were nervous about giving up a second car. The school run, shopping, popping to see family – could a bike really do all that?

Through our Connecting Communities project Cycling UK Moray they borrowed an e-cargo bike and tried it for themselves.

Very quickly the car keys stayed on the hook while school runs, food shops and errands became quicker, easier and a lot more fun.

Their grandchild loved riding on the back, Elaine’s confidence on the road grew, and soon the whole family were choosing bikes over the car for everyday trips.

👉 Read Elaine’s story and see how a short e-cargo bike loan helped her family save money, stay active and rethink local travel:

Thanks to Hitrans and Moray Councill for funding Connecting Communities in Moray and helping more people test real alternatives to a second car.

What a lot of miles pupils and teachers racked up in the challenge. We had 9 schools in Dumfries and Galloway Council taking part, with 15084 miles earned through active journeys and physical activity. Congratulations to Dalbeattie Primary School P6 and P7C who were the winning local school. I Bike Communities D&G

Well done to all the schools across Scotland that took part in this year's Leg it to Lapland challenge ☃️

We had almost 5,000 pupils from more than 30 schools getting active on their way to school 🚶👨‍🦽🚴‍♀️🛴

They clocked enough miles to reach Lapland over 20 times! 👏

Have you thought about the school run for when the kids go on Thursday? Maybe your child is about to start P1, S1 or start at a new school, perhaps they're now old enough to walk by themselves, or maybe they're wanting to try cycling to school.

By taking a little time over the next few days to think about the route to school and even do a trial journey, you could help your child's confidence and make it easier for them to walk, wheel, cycle or take public transport to school. We know safety is a barrier preventing more children travelling independently and actively to school so why not plan and check the route together, think about crossing points on roads, and which quieter routes and cycle ways could be used. If you don't have time to physically check the route, you could look at a map such as Open Street Map or use Street View. Remember to check the new timetables if your child will be using buses to travel to school: https://www.dumfriesandgalloway.gov.uk/roads-transport-parking/public-transport/bus-ferry-timetables 🚌
