Thankfully the rain didn't last too long this morning when 15 volunteers litter picked around the Hub, football field, Crickhowell Rd and surroundings pathways. One of our group also cut some vegetation that was starting to block one of the pathways by the Skate Park/basketball court.

We collected 30 bags of rubbish, the usual discarded traffic cone and a few bicycle tyres.

We were also joined by Daniel and Daniel Jr from FixandGive CIC. Barbara from Pentwyn also popped over to help๐Ÿ‘

Grateful thanks to Paula and Tesco St Mellons for donating bottles of water and chocolate wafers for the group.

Thank you to everyone who joined us today. We're a small but mighty group who really make a difference to our area ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿซถ

A few of our committee members and volunteers teamed up with Bishop Childs CIW Primary School for a clean up yesterday. This was all down to one young individual who would like her walks to and from school to be free of litter, and who also wants to set a good example to others to take care of where we live. Very inspiring and we were more than happy to be of help. It was great to see and catch up with one of SMCU's founding members too. Thank you for reaching out to us ๐Ÿ‘

In just half an hour, we filled 12 bags with litter from the outskirts of the school and local park, even though the paths were relatively free of litter we still managed to find some. Thank you to all the staff at the school for being so welcoming, providing refreshments and joining their pupils in the litter pick. It was such a positive afternoon and the children loved finding and removing the litter from their local environment to make it safer for all. Thank you all for giving your time to clean up our parks and pathways. We really enjoyed being part of this event and it is very encouraging to see children that care so much, diolch.

Our next group event will be on Saturday 16th May. We'll post details soon but all the family are welcome to join us ๐Ÿšฎ

The sun was shining for us once again whilst we worked together to clean up for our community. Thank you to all 14 volunteers who gave their time for our group litter pick today. We filled 50 bags with litter and removed some bigger rubbish items too. Crosbie's Pond and it's surrounding green space is looking much better now. Great to see lots of butterflies and bees about. The birds were cheering us on too.

We mostly concentrated on the pond, the little green spaces that run along and throughout the new estate to remove all that we could. Some items are still in the pond as the mud was too deep for us to retrieve them safely. We managed to get a life ring back into the stand though. 3 of our volunteers headed to Cemaes Park, Trowbridge, to fill a few bags with the strewn litter. We've reported some fly tipping and broken glass too. Our next event will be on the 16th of May. Please do join us to help make a positive difference.

With the usual food and drinks packaging filling the bags, we also removed bigger items which included a kids bike, Tesco trolley, footballs, sweet tubs, shoes, a crutch and parts of an air fryer all from the pond. Plus various wood and hard plastics, toys, wheels and tyres, skateboard, garden figurines, hoover, a council plastic recycling box from Newport, pouffet, trampoline parts, a door, Christmas tree and a child's garden chair and parasol. And a lovely pair of sunglasses!

Thanks again to our amazing volunteers. If you've seen an area that could do with a St Mellons clean up, please message us ๐Ÿ‘

Our Big Cardiff Tidy event was a great success! 23 fabulous people volunteered their time to clean up our local community and filled 56 bags with litter and removed various rubbish items from our streets, parks and green spaces. Thank you all for helping make a positive difference for where we live. Even the strong gusts of winds couldn't stop us!
We joined Keep Wales Tidy - Cadwch Gymru'n Daclus at the Hive to support the launch of The Hive becoming a litter picking Hub ๐Ÿšฎ This will be great for the community. Thank you for providing hot drinks and biscuits for all the volunteers' hard work this morning ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

We collected 45 nos canisters which will go to Cardiff Rivers Group to recycle. Along with filling 56 bags with the usual food and drinks litter, including a 21 year old crisp packet! we also removed polystyrene, tyres, a pushchair, glass garden table, hosepipe, food bins, plant pots, various hard plastics and wood, wicker chairs and garden furniture, clothes, lots of plastic bags, astroturf, broken armchair, some vapes and a sandcastle bucket! Thanks again to all who gave their time and efforts today. We really appreciate it and couldn't do it without you ๐Ÿ’š

This is our last event of the year. Our committee members are taking a well deserved break. Don't forget, if you want to litter pick in your own time, you can register as a litter champion with Keep Wales Tidy and lend equipment from the Hive.
We will see you all in 2026.
