Techniquest is the UK’s longest established science centre. Founded in 1986, by Professor John Beetlestone and his colleagues from Cardiff University, its first site was the gas showroom opposite Cardiff Castle. In 1988 it moved to a pre-fabricated industrial building in Cardiff Bay, with 100 exhibits; it was here that it launched its education programmes for schools. In 1995 it moved to its current site, the UK’s first purpose-built science centre, in Cardiff Bay. The building was formerly a heavy engineering plant; Paul Koralek of ABK Architects designed Techniquest around the framework of the original building. TECHNIQUEST TODAY
Techniquest builds its own exhibits in its workshops in Cardiff. It is one of the leading commercial exhibit builders in the UK, selling exhibits and programmes to science centres around the world. This commercial activity is an essential income stream for delivering Techniquest’s mission. Techniquest was the first science centre in the UK to have Governing Member status in the Association of Science and Technology Centres (ASTC).

To round off this week, we wanted to share a special visitor’s story that was inspired by his favourite toy and a visit to Techniquest… 🚀

"My toy Buzz Lightyear has had so many fun adventures with me but the best one was to see the science at Techniquest in Cardiff Bay. Together we launched a rocket. We held down the red button to build up pressure and quickly let go. Then we pressed the green button to fire the rocket! Buzz shouted to infinity and beyond! We looked through a telescope and saw moons and planets close up. Buzz whispered in my ear that s my home! We controlled a robot arm that explores space. Me and Buzz were so sad to see how humans are destroying this planet. The penguins are losing their homes and gorillas have no water to drink because of global warming. Buzz said well there seems to be no sign of intelligent life anywhere! ...just like he says in the movie! My Buzz has a broken arm now so I am sending him on a new mission...to be recycled! I hope his parts can be used for Artemis next mission!"
— Amrit Sandhu, Age 6.

Thank you Amrit, we hope you enjoyed your space treats we sent you in the post 😃

Want to be inspired too? We are open all weekend to celebrate the final days of ! Why not bring a favourite toy along too, and explore our hands-on space exhibits, giant planet Earth 🌍, and our immersive Planetarium. 🪐🎟️
