🌟 Want to build confidence, learn new skills, and connect with other young people? Our Independent Living Skills Programme is back! 🎉

Designed for care-experienced young people aged 18–30, this FREE 8-week programme will help you develop the practical skills and confidence needed for independent living.

📅 Starts: Monday 22 June
⏰ Time: 5:30pm - 7:30pm
📍 Location: VOYPIC, 100 Great Patrick Street, Belfast

Over 8 weeks, you'll explore:
💰 Budgeting & managing money
🍳 Cooking & daily living skills
🏡 Homecare essentials
🧠 Wellbeing & self-care
🤝 Healthy relationships
🚀 Personal development & future planning

And it doesn't stop there! After the programme, participants can continue meeting through a weekly support group- a welcoming space to build skills, access support, and connect with peers. 💙

It is deeply disappointing that the Petition of Concern has been used to block amendments seeking to raise the age of criminal responsibility.

This represents a misuse of a mechanism designed to protect minority rights. It should not be used to block progress on fundamental issues facing disadvantaged children and young people.

We urge MLAs who used the PoC to seriously reconsider. It will be our most disadvantaged children and young people who pay the price.

We believe that everyone should feel safe in their own home. The racist violence we have seen this week is totally wrong. Many children, young people, and families have been intimidated and terrified in our communities.

In partnership with statutory services, VOYPIC is working to make sure young people impacted by the violence are safe and protected. We will continue to do that as needed.

If you are in danger, call the police on 999 (in an emergency) or 101 (non-emergency). Remember, Social Services will be working throughout the weekend. You can contact them on 0800 197 9995.

NI Direct has launched a dedicated page with help and advice for anyone affected by the disorder, with practical information and support on reporting hate crime, housing assistance, financial support, victim services, transport updates, schools and exams, and other advice. www.nidirect.gov.uk/advice-help

We’re delighted to share that VOYPIC has been awarded almost £500,000 in funding over the next three years from The National Lottery Community Fund Strengthening Communities programme.

This investment will enable us to launch Link Up, an exciting new project supporting unaccompanied asylum-seeking young people in care across Northern Ireland. Through Link Up, we will help young people build connections, access support, develop confidence, and create a sense of belonging within their communities.

We are incredibly grateful to The National Lottery Community Fund and to National Lottery players whose support makes funding like this possible. This investment will make a real and lasting difference in young people's lives.

Great to be at Stormont earlier this week, attending the launch of the Improving Democratic Education project and the All Party Group on Youth Participation.

We heard from members of the Electoral Commission Youth Voice Network about their work to strengthen democratic education for young people, and learned about new research findings on democratic education in Northern Ireland.

It was also encouraging to hear from the Department of Education about how the Principles of Participation for Children and Young People are being embedded across government. We had valuable discussions about the importance of keeping young people informed about the impact of their views and feedback.

Young people’s voices matter, and meaningful participation means making sure those voices lead to action.

Based on our work with School of Social Sciences, Education and Social Work at Queen's University Queen's University Belfast to better understand the experiences of young people leaving care during the COVID-19 pandemic, we’re delighted to share that the 2021 article has been selected as one of nine papers featured in the Journal of Children’s Services Virtual Special Issue on Children and Young People’s Voices in Children’s Services Research.

The paper highlights the experiences of care leavers during the pandemic, including challenges around isolation, mental health, and access to support, while underscoring the importance of listening to young people’s voices in shaping services and policy.

The special issue is free to access until 20 June.
