This week we’re taking part in a series of events organised by Ulster University and Department of Health SPPG, all around widening access and participation in higher education for care experienced young people. We’ve had two great days talking about everything we’re doing, and what more we will be doing, with colleagues across the sector. Looking forward to the final session tomorrow!

Based on our work with School of Social Sciences, Education and Social Work at Queen's University Queen's University Belfast to better understand the experiences of young people leaving care during the COVID-19 pandemic, we’re delighted to share that the 2021 article has been selected as one of nine papers featured in the Journal of Children’s Services Virtual Special Issue on Children and Young People’s Voices in Children’s Services Research.

The paper highlights the experiences of care leavers during the pandemic, including challenges around isolation, mental health, and access to support, while underscoring the importance of listening to young people’s voices in shaping services and policy.

The special issue is free to access until 20 June.

VOYPIC supports the Holiday Meal Payments Bill. Children should not face hunger during the school holidays, and this Bill would make a real difference to children who need that support most. We stand with the campaign and urge decision-makers to act.

What a way to wrap up our Wild Youth programme with Ulster Wildlife 🌿⛰️✨

Earlier this week, the Belfast Participation Forum took on Cavehill for an amazing end-of-programme hike... and what a journey it’s been over the past few weeks! 💚

From getting closer to nature and exploring the outdoors, to making pencils from twigs ✏️🌱, creating nature-inspired art 🎨🍃, visiting Bog Meadows Nature Reserve, and finally hiking Cavehill, we’ve made so many great memories along the way.

A huge thank you to Moragaine and her team for guiding us, inspiring us, and making every session so enjoyable 🙌💚

It was great to welcome our friends from EPIC, Empowering People in Care, our 5 Nations 1 Voice partners in the south of Ireland, to our Belfast office earlier this week.

We spent the day sharing conversations about the challenges facing young people in and leaving care across this island, and exploring how we can work together to ensure young people are supported to have a real voice in the decisions that shape their lives.

Partnership, collaboration and listening to lived experience are at the heart of creating lasting change, and we’re excited to continue our work together.

It was great to be at the launch of Foster Care Fortnight yesterday morning in the Long Gallery, Stormont. Well done to Jade and everyone at The Fostering Network NI for such a wonderful start to the week, and for sharing the amazing artwork and poems created by young people living with foster carers. Really inspiring morning

Thanks to our friend Jackson (the Mayor) for calling in to see us in Ballymena last week, and for bringing along his party leader, Jon Burrows. It was great to talk to them about some of the issues that are important to us, and what we want politicians to do to make care better.

We told them about ‘Show Us You Care’, our call to action, and why delivering the promises of the Independent Review of Children’s Social Care Services is so important. We also talked about young people and the justice system, and how criminalising children (sometimes as young as 10) is just not right. Thanks for listening!
