The Ban Conversion Practices Coalition Steering Group welcomes the UK Government's renewed commitment to bringing a draft ban on conversion practices in this Parliament.
We are eagerly awaiting the publication of this Bill, given that this Government’s King’s Speech commitment in the last Parliament was not met, and that the previous Government had promised a ban on these abusive practices since 2018.
Whether through Stormont or Westminster, we are committed to working to secure a comprehensive ban on conversion practices.

Cara-Friend is thrilled to announce that we have been awarded a £141,654 grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund for our new project: Dear Friend: Preserving and Celebrating LGBTQIA+ Heritage in Northern Ireland!

Cara-Friend was founded in 1974 as a befriending and support organisation for people who we would today refer to as the LGBTQIA+ community. Cara-Friend continues to support and empower LGBTQIA+ people in Northern Ireland today, and this project, thanks to generous Heritage Fund Support, will explore, protect, and showcase the remarkable stories held within Cara-Friend’s vibrant fifty-year archive and the stories of LGBTQIA+ individuals whose experiences have often went ignored or unwritten.

The Dear Friend Project will preserve these fascinating stories through a series of activities spanning the next two years, culminating in the creation of an exhibition that will be used not only for education, but for creative performance: a recreation of the original office that Cara-Friend worked from in the early 1970s. We will also be running ‘Re-Creation Events’, showcasing some of the earliest events that Cara-Friend held for Belfast’s young LGBTQIA+ community that were a lifeline for many.

This project will put history in your hands. Volunteers as part of the project will be invited into archives and libraries to learn about the dynamic history of the LGBTQIA+ community in Northern Ireland, working with specialists to preserve and digitise these materials so that they can be accessed by anyone well into the future, and gaining valuable knowledge and experience while doing so.

Cara-Friend will be seeking interviews with those who have experience as service users, volunteers, or staff over the past fifty years of the organisation’s remarkable life, as well as those who have not engaged with Cara-Friend but who have experiences of being a member of, or a friend, family member, or ally to the LGBTQIA+ community in Northern Ireland. This project centres on the idea that there is no voice among the LGBTQIA+ community that is not worth hearing and preserving.

Keep a close eye on our social media to learn about the project’s outputs and how you can get involved in ensuring that Northern Irish LGBTQIA+ stories can be preserved and shared for everyone.

Once again, we wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to the National Lottery Heritage Fund and to the National Lottery players for allowing us to explore this fascinating history and ensure that it survives well into the future!

making a difference to the lives of LGBTQIA+ people. This is regarded as an invaluable and necessary support and resource building programme for LGBTQIA+ groups across Northern Ireland, with a strong emphasis on rurally based organisations.
