'Homelessness is not inevitable. As parties prepare to ask for our vote, we're asking them a simple question: what will they do to help end homelessness in Northern Ireland?"

Our Priorities for the 2027 Assembly Election sets out the action we want partys to take in the next mandate: deliver more affordable and secure homes, strengthen homelessness prevention and improve access to healthcare.

The message is simple: everyone deserves their own front door. With the right political action, that is possible.

Today, Simon Community launched A Northern Ireland Free From Homelessness - our priorities for the 2027 Assembly Election.

There are many demands on political attention. Providing people with a safe place to live must be among the most urgent.

At the heart of today's launch was a simple message: everyone deserves a front door of their own. Our symbolic pink door displayed the number 84,000, representing the number of people who could be experiencing homelessness in Northern Ireland by 2032 if current trends continue.

Shaped by the experiences of people who have faced homelessness and Simon Community staff who support them, our priorities focus on three key areas:

🏠 More affordable and secure homes
🛡️ Stronger prevention
❤️ Better access to healthcare

New analysis released by Simon Community suggests the number of people experiencing homelessness could rise from 64,417 today to almost 84,000 by 2032. As parties prepare to ask for our votes, we're asking them one simple question: what will they do to stop homelessness continuing to rise?

Homelessness is not inevitable, but changing its trajectory will take leadership, investment and urgent action across government.

Over the coming weeks, we'll be sharing more about these priorities and the change we believe is needed during the next Assembly mandate.

Building Hope Together – A Celebration of Impact

Last week, we were delighted to welcome supporters, partners and friends to Belfast Harbour Commissioners' Office for our Building Hope Together celebration.

It was a chance to come together, reflect on the difference your support makes, and celebrate the stories of hope, resilience and progress that are happening every day across our services.

The evening also gave us the opportunity to recognise and thank Joe O'Neill as he comes to the end of his tenure as Chair. Joe has been a passionate champion of Simon Community, and we are deeply grateful for his leadership, commitment and support over the years.

A huge thanks to Georgie, our Wellbeing Manager, for sharing how vital wellbeing support helps people rebuild confidence and move forward, and to Ngaire, whose honest and inspiring lived experience reminded us all why this work matters.

We're also incredibly grateful to Turley for sponsoring the drinks reception and helping make the evening so special.

Most of all, thank you to everyone who joined us and to all those who continue to support Simon Community. Your generosity, compassion and belief in people make it possible for us to be there when we're needed most.

Together, we're building hope, creating opportunities and working towards a future without homelessness.

This Will to Give Week, we're taking a moment to remember the incredible people who have chosen to leave Simon Community a gift in their Will.

Their generosity has created a lasting legacy, helping people experiencing homelessness find safety, support and hope for the future. Every gift, no matter its size, helps ensure that no one has to face homelessness alone.

Today, we celebrate the difference they continue to make.✨

Currently, someone is considered "threatened with homelessness" if they are likely to become homeless within 28 days. But this is far too late for meaningful prevention.

In Northern Ireland more than 64,000 people, including almost 20,000 children, are now without a safe, secure home. They deserve better, including more time to access support.

Evidence from elsewhere shows that longer prevention periods work.

We strongly support extending this window from 28 days to 60 days. It would allow earlier intervention, align with private rented sector notice periods, and create more opportunities to sustain tenancies, resolve arrears and prevent crisis.

Last week, Simon Community responded to the Call for Evidence on the Housing (Amendment) Bill which calls for this extension.

With the right resourcing, this change can reduce reliance on temporary accommodation, ease pressure on public services and protect people from the trauma of homelessness.

This Bill is an important step, but a statutory prevention duty is still needed to ensure early intervention is prioritised and properly funded across the system.
