What keeps someone coming back to Kolkata, time and time again?

For our amazing HOPE UK Trustee, Neil, his many visits have given him the opportunity to see HOPE’s work first-hand, meet the people behind it and experience what makes the organisation so special.

But what does HOPE mean to him?

We asked Neil to share his thoughts, and his answer comes from years of experience, connections and memories.

Thank you, Neil, for being part of HOPE and for everything you do to support us!

Every child deserves the chance to dream big.

Sometimes, hope starts with something simple - a pair of shoes, a book, or a helping hand.

£10 donation gives a child a pair of shoes and a school uniform, and confidence to walk proudly into school.

£30 donation enables us to provide educational stationery and toys, sparking joy and imagination in the classroom.

£80 donation pays for a teacher's monthly salary, so learning never stops.

To mark World Mental Health Day, HOPE’s Kasba Girls’ Home recently organised an awareness session for children in its care, encouraging open conversations about mental health and emotional wellbeing 🧡

The session focused on breaking the stigma surrounding mental health, supporting one another and reminding children that it’s okay not to be okay.

Above all, it reinforced the importance of speaking up, reaching out and seeking help when needed.

Today marks United Nations Day, a reminder that every child deserves safety, care, and the chance to thrive.

We reflect on the values that guide global change: equality and opportunity for all. We see these values in action every day through education, healthcare and protection for vulnerable children and families in Kolkata.

Last year only, HOPE’s Brian’s Way Resource Centres supported 237 children with special needs, and 219 of them made measurable progress through functional therapies. 453 people in the community gained greater awareness of disability inclusion and the support available for children with special needs and their families.

Across our three centres in Kolkata and Howrah, children receive tailored therapies and special education designed to help them build independence, confidence, and life skills.

While access to inclusive education continues to grow, many schools still face challenges in providing the specialised facilities and resources that children with special needs require.

That’s where initiatives like Brian’s Way make a difference, offering children the support, encouragement, and opportunities they need to reach their full potential.

How much do you know about HOPE’s Child Watch Programme?

Working with vulnerable children and families in some of Kolkata’s most disadvantaged communities, Child Watch helps keep children safe, in school and connected to the support they need.

Through a 24/7 community safety network, the programme identifies children at risk and works to prevent child rights violations, including child labour and early marriage. It also supports children to enrol and stay in school and connects families with healthcare, legal support and other essential services.

This December, HOPE’s Big Give Christmas Challenge will support the Child Watch Programme. Over the coming weeks, we will be sharing more about its work and the difference it makes to children and families across Kolkata.

We are also finalising our 2025/2026 Impact Report - we look forward to sharing the latest updates with you.
