Aberkenfig Welfare Association We are a charitable association providing leisure, education and social opportunities and room hire.

We are a charitable association recorded in the Books of the Charity Commissioners in August 1928 as a “non-sectarian and non-political place of education, social in*******se, dancing, indoor and outdoor recreation, games and sports”
And so, it continues today. As you may know the Welfare is a hive of activity with groups using the Welfare Hall, The Len Evans Centre and the beautifully kept bowlin

g green. The Local Family History group and The Bowls Club are long term residents. We also have a wide range of regular users that include a dance school, a local art group, tai chi classes, karate, line dancing, judo, keep fit, a bonsai tree group and a ladies’ friendship group. The Aberkenfig Welfare Association crafters had a fabulous afternoon visiting the Squirrels Nest Men’s Shed.

While some of the nesters have amazing practical skills, it's all about friendship and community. The Men's Sheds movement prioritises mental health and inclusivity. It is a place of wecome to all and welcomes women as well as men.

It has an amazing history and the crafters learnt that it was the first Men's Shed in Wales and still has some of its founding members - what a legacy!.

It is open 9 to 1 Monday to Friday and runs various groups including warm hubs in the winter and the nest is dementia-friendly.

It was lovely for the crafters and nesters to meet up. Both are about companionship and community, and both are a great place for a friendly cuppa!

As we said - The Aberkenfig Welfare Association crafters were delighted to receive some traditional knitting dollies from The Squirrel’s Nest Men’s Shed in Tondu, and transform them.

The Squirrel's Nest in Bridgend is a local community project and woodwork workshop.

Aberkenfig Welfare Association and our Wednesday Crafters were delighted to have found out more about this special branch of Men's ShedsCymru. 🥰

As a result of this special collaboration, our lovely crafters are planning a very special session for September's meeting, this coming Wednesday at 12.30.

They are going off-site to visit The Squirrel’s Nest and find out more about the project and compare notes on craftwork and working together- should be fun!

The Aberkenfig Welfare Association crafters are a talented bunch! 🧵They met as usual on the first Wednesday of the month to make some rather traditional knitting dollies.🧶

Thet were lucky to receive the dollies from The Squirrel’s Nest Men’s Shed in Tondu, and transformed them with paint and imagination!🎨

The Squirrel's Nest in Bridgend is a local community project and woodwork workshop. It is part of the Men's Sheds Cymru network and is located in Tondu. It offers a safe, friendly space to reduce loneliness, support mental health, and share practical skills like wood carving and photography.

Aberkenfig Welfare Association and our Wednesday Crafters are delighted to have found out more about them. 🥰

It's good to know that The Wefare, our craft group, The Squirrel's Nest and Men's Sheds Cymru are all helping to bring people together!
