Tondu and District Art Society

Tondu and District Art Society A local art group. The group meets weekly in Aberkenfig and holds two exhibitions a year along with demonstrations and workshops.

Tondu and District Art Society, (Tadas), is a local art group which was founded in 1982. We currently have a membership of around 50 amateur artists, as well as a small waiting list of people wishing to join us. We are a friendly group of people who enjoy painting, and art in general, as a hobby, and are always willing to share our ideas and techniques with each other. This has resulted in a high

standard of work among our members and has led to the high reputation that the Art Society enjoys. The art group meets weekly from 7pm to 9pm on Tuesdays at the Len Evans Centre which is within the grounds of Aberkenfig Welfare Association in the centre of the village. We hold an exhibition at Bryngarw Country Park, in April each year and have also held a second one at the Len Evans Centre, Aberkenfig in August from time to time. We hope that the work we display will help to spread interest in the arts among the general public and encourage others to join our friendly art group. Entrance to our exhibitions is free, and a warm welcome is always extended to our visitors. During the year we hold at least three demonstrations led by professional artists. These events are also open to members of the general public who are welcome to join us for a small fee of £3. Once a month we aim to arrange a different optional art activity in which our members are able to participate to encourage them to learn new skills, use different media and develop new techniques if they so wish. We always look forward to hearing from members of the public wishing to join us or to learn more about the activities of the Art Society. Please contact our Chairman or Secretary on our page if you would like to get in touch.

Our annual Spring Exhibition has now come to an end. The display boards have been taken down and transported back to our base, the room has been returned to normal, and all the art work has been safely packed away for collection at our art club meeting on Tuesday. The volunteer members of Tondu and District Art Society can again be congratulated for all their hard work throughout this busy session. The high standard of art work entered has again been much in evidence and has attracted so many positive comments from our visitors. The atmosphere has been terrific and supportive throughout the exhibition period and we now look forward to the next one. Watch this space.

A team of dedicated volunteer members from Tondu and District Art Society have worked hard throughout this afternoon to ensure that our latest Annual Spring Exhibition is all set up and ready to receive our visitors on Saturday and Sunday, 1th and 12th April at Bryngarw Country Park, Brynmenyn. The exhibition will be open from 10am on each day. We have a wide variety of 150 paintings on display, as well as a range of cards. Most of the art work on display will be on sale, having been produced by 34 members of our art society. As always, we will look forward to receiving our visitors over the coming weekend where everyone can be assured of a warm welcome. Visitors to our exhibitions always comment on the high standard of work on display by our talented amateur artists and this year will be no exception. Several new members have joined our friendly art society throughout the year so if anyone would like to know more about our art club please do not hesitate to enquire with any of our members who will be there during the exhibition. We very much look forward to seeing you this weekend

At our most recent meeting this week, a large appreciative audience of Tondu and District Society’s members and visitors were treated to a very interesting, inspiring, and informative demonstration on effective sketching techniques delivered by accomplished professional artist, Peter Cronin. Peter demonstrated a number of his sketching methods in the two hour session, showing how he develops the stages in sketching the main features of buildings, trees, farm animals, etc emphasising the importance of shapes and tones, and most importantly avoiding unnecessary detail which a photograph would normally capture. It was a demonstration with lots of inspirational ideas which we, as an art society could develop further as one of our monthly art activity sessions. We look forward to a return visit from Peter for another demonstration in the future.

The latest monthly art session of our art society🎨took place this week with the theme being “Portraits”. Thanks to Anita, one of our committee members, who had volunteered to act as the model for the evening, and for sitting so still throughout the session🙂. It was interesting to see how each member interpreted the topic in their own particular way, producing a range of whole figure or close up drawings making use of graphite pencil, pastel or acrylic paint to produce the results. It was another successful and enjoyably productive occasion, with almost all members present taking part in this optional monthly activity once again.

A reminder for all our members that on:-
Tuesday 24th Feb, our next monthly optional art activity will be "Portraits" whereby one of our members has kindly volunteered to be the "sitter" for this workshop session.

Tondu and District Art Society members saw red at their recent meeting! Most members took part in this month's optional art activity, the topic of which was named “Seeing Red". These sessions are proving to be enjoyable and productive sessions, with the aim of encouraging members to work on a particular topic, become a little challenging by taking them out of their “comfort zone” and developing their artistic skills in unfamiliar situations. This latest activity proved yet again to be an enthusiastic and enjoyable evening with a wide range of imaginative results produced by everyone who took part.

25/01/2026

A reminder to all members of Tondu and District Art Society that at our next meeting, on Tuesday Jan 27th, we shall be holding the next of our monthly themed art sessions. The new topic, suggested by one of our members will be “Seeing Red”. Get your thinking caps on! How you will interpret this particular topic? Hopefully, we should see a variety of imaginative results. Members are aware that these monthly sessions are optional, but hopefully the majority will take part again in this latest activity.
