Sofia was building a new life in Zurich, Switzerland when her world was changed forever. Her mother and later her grandmother were both diagnosed with cancer.

Since they lived in Greece, Sofia became a long-distance caregiver. She spent her time travelling back and forth, making calls, and keeping up with medical news, while quietly carrying a grief she didn’t know how to name.

In 2023, her mother’s cancer became more aggressive. People kept urging Sofia to take care of herself, too. But in the months that followed, the stress of caregiving and the sadness she carried inside meant that she lost a lot of weight.

After her mother passed away, Sofia found support at Cancer Support Switzerland. Talking to someone there helped her begin to make sense of everything she had been carrying.

If Sofia’s story sounds familiar, please know you’re not alone.

What if Last Aid was as familiar as First Aid?

Most of us know what to do when someone needs emergency help. But fewer of us know how to support someone who is nearing the end of life.

That’s where Last Aid comes in.

Earlier this week, we joined palliative vaud at the Morges market to raise awareness of Last Aid courses and share information about Cancer Support Switzerland’s free support services for people affected by cancer.

The courses explore practical and personal questions around the end of life, including:
🕊️ Death as a normal part of life
🗓️ Planning ahead and making decisions
🤍 Relieving suffering
🫶 Final goodbyes

Our next free Last Aid courses in English are:

Geneva — 16 November 2026
With palliative genève

Lausanne — 29 January 2027
At the Ligue vaudoise contre le cancer

Navigating cancer comes with a lot of noise, we're here to offer a quiet place. 💚

After a short summer break, we're back this month with events where you can connect with others, share your everyday experiences, or just slow down.

Here's what's on in Zurich this September:
🧘‍♀️ Yoga: 7 and 21 September
🗨️ Zurich Support Group: 22 September

Every session is a little different, but they share the same core: care, warmth and mutual understanding. Whether you feel like talking about your week or simply want to sit in a room where you don't have to explain yourself, you'll be warmly welcomed.
