In a small village on the outskirts of Afghanistan, Fatima held her pregnant daughter’s hand tightly as they traveled from one hospital to another, desperate for help. Her daughter, Mariam, had been in labor for hours, exhausted and in pain. At the first hospital, they were told there was no space. At the second, there were no staff available to assist her safely. With every passing hour, Fatima feared she would lose both her daughter and the unborn child. As night fell, a neighbor told them about Action for Development and the maternity services available through Shaheed Abdulrazaq Clinic. With nowhere else to turn, they made the difficult journey there.
The moment they arrived, everything changed.
The midwife on duty welcomed Mariam with kindness and urgency. She reassured the frightened mother and daughter, checked Mariam carefully, and stayed by her side throughout the delivery. Hours later, the cries of a healthy baby girl filled the room. Today, both Mariam and her newborn daughter are healthy and safe. With tears in her eyes, Fatima says, “I thought I would lose my child. No hospital accepted us. But here, they treated my daughter with dignity and care. The midwife saved both my daughter and my granddaughter. I will never forget her kindness.”
For thousands of women across Afghanistan, this story is painfully familiar. Years of , , and collapsing health systems have left many mothers without access to even the most basic maternal . Women in remote communities often face dangerous pregnancies alone, unable to reach hospitals or afford treatment. Too many mothers and babies lose their lives from preventable complications. In this critical situation, Action for Development is helping bridge the gap by supporting maternal health services through facilities like Shaheed Abdulrazaq Clinic, including delivery and home-based care for vulnerable women who otherwise would have nowhere to go.
Every safe delivery means a mother survives.
Every healthy newborn means a family keeps hope alive.
