Sharing updates from the global parliamentary community, including the International Knowledge Network of Women in Politics, commenting on 's political landscape:

"According to a coalition of women-led organisations, women could hold as little as 2.7% of Senate seats after the 2027 elections, following the outcomes of the 2026 party primaries.

Only 3 women secured Senate tickets, and just 2 of 15 presidential candidates are women.

The issue is not a lack of qualified women - it is the persistence of structural barriers within political institutions. From exclusionary party processes to limited access to nominations and leadership opportunities, women continue to face significant obstacles to political participation.

The coalition’s recommendations are both practical and urgent:
• Support the passage of the Special Seats Bill.
• Increase women’s representation through party nominations.
• Require female deputy governorship candidates alongside male gubernatorial candidates.
• Improve transparency through gender-disaggregated electoral data.
• End exclusionary practices that disadvantage women during candidate selection."

Sharing updates from the global parliamentary community, including the NATIONAL ASSEMBLY OF PAKISTAN, following its Women's Parliamentary Caucus (WPC) 12th General Assembly meeting to deliberate on the rise of honour killings and honour-based violence in Pakistan.

"Opening the session, Dr Syeda Shahida Rehmani, Secretary of the Women's Parliamentary Caucus, emphasized that honour killings remain one of the gravest forms of violence against women and require a stronger and more coordinated state response.
Dr. Rehmani stated that while important legislative reforms have been introduced over the years, implementation challenges continue to persist. She stressed the need to further strengthen the legal framework governing honour crimes and ensure that perpetrators do not escape accountability through social, familial, or procedural pressures."

The IPU continues to encourage parliaments to take stronger measures to support and protect women and girls.

Human rights. Democratic freedoms. The safety of those who speak on behalf of others.

These are not abstract ideals - they are the foundations of everything parliaments exist to protect.

Yet around the world, these foundations are under increasing pressure. Rights are being eroded, democratic space is narrowing, and too many voices are being silenced.

The Inter-Parliamentary Union's Bring Human Rights into Focus campaign is a call to action for parliamentarians everywhere: to bring human rights back into the light - and to keep them there.

The future of human rights is written in parliaments. Start writing.

Sharing updates from the global parliamentary community, including the Rwanda Parliament following the IPU's Global Conference of Women Parliamentarians.

"On behalf of the Parliament of Rwanda, Senator Murangwa Ndangiza Hadija participated in the Global Conference of Women Parliamentarians organized by the IPU in Belgrade, Serbia.
Speaking during the session, “Gender-Sensitive Parliaments: Advancing Societies Free of Stereotypes,” Senator Hadidja highlighted that Rwanda’s progress in advancing gender equality has been driven by strong political will and leadership, a conducive policy environment, and gender-responsive legal frameworks designed to accelerate inclusive social transformation.
“I would like to underline that Rwanda is actively addressing gender stereotypes by passing laws that ensure women’s voices are central in policymaking, directly challenging stereotypes about leadership and societal roles. Through its oversight function, Parliament ensures that gender-sensitive laws enacted are not symbolic but effectively implemented.”

Sharing updates from the global parliamentary community, following the IPU Conference of Women Parliamentarians, with updates from Jolanta Zięba-Gzik.

"During the Inter-Parliamentary Union's Conference of Women Parliamentarians, we spoke of the challenges women continue to face in politics, as well as their professional and social life, and ways to eliminate the barriers that limit their activity and participation in decision-making processes.

This valuable experience shows that many challenges remain common regardless of country or culture. This is why collaboration and sharing experiences are so important to build more open and just societies."

Sharing updates from the Inter-Parliamentary Union's Vice President, Gabriela Morawska-Stanecka, following the Twelve Plus Group Seminar:

"During the recent debates at the Twelve Plus Group Seminar, we talked about the responsibility of internet platforms, protecting young people from online violence and misinformation, and where the line between safety and freedom in the digital world runs. I also had the opportunity to take part in a panel on the challenges for children and adolescents on social media. It's a topic that requires the cooperation of experts, legislators, and internet platforms themselves.
There were also conversations with participants from different countries and presentations of Polish culture and traditions. Such meetings demonstrate that although we face similar challenges, we can collectively search for effective solutions."
