Across Asia and the Pacific, young women are navigating conflict, violence, the climate crisis and the ongoing impacts of COVID-19 โ€” while continuing to lead change in their communities.

The research shows that crises are increasing young womenโ€™s vulnerability to violence, disrupting access to education and healthcare, restricting their movement, and leaving them out of decisions that directly affect their lives and recovery.

But it also shows the power of young womenโ€™s leadership. โœŠ๐Ÿฝ

And young women didnโ€™t simply contribute their stories to this research. They helped shape it.
As members of the advisory committee, young women leaders from across the regions guided the research at every stage.

What happens when young women are equipped to lead climate action in their own communities?

In Kinshasa, the Project to Empower Young Women Leaders and Managers for Climate Change (PEJ Phase 2) is building on the success of its first phase by putting young women at the forefront of environmental action. ๐ŸŒ

Faced with recurrent flooding, poor waste management, and growing environmental degradation, young women leaders, municipal councilors, and movement leaders are strengthening their skills to advocate for climate-responsive solutions, promote ecological waste management, and influence local policy.

Through capacity-building workshops, community awareness campaigns, and structured advocacy, the project is also challenging how communities think about wasteโ€”shifting the narrative from waste as a burden to its potential as an economic opportunity. โ™ป๏ธ๐Ÿ’ก

๐Ÿ’ช From advocacy to environmental action, these young women are helping shape a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Kinshasa.

This project is supported by the Youth Empowerment Fund (YEF) Phase II in partnership with Global Youth Mobilization and EU International Partnerships

We are launching Young Women's Leadership across the Regions of Asia and the Pacific in the Face of Major Challenges, a World YWCA RiseUp! study at 3:00 PM AEST.

Over 400 young women told us what stands in the way of their leadership and what makes it possible for them to lead. In an hour, you will hear it from them directly.

Still time to join: https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/6mynEAdiTnCK58zfMkaUwA

Asia Pacific study, launching 27 August. Their advisory committee co-designed the research from start to finish.

This is the Feminist Consultation Methodology in action: young women leading as experts on their own lives, not as data points in someone else's report.

"Few young women feel they are taken seriously as leaders within their broader community."

This is one of the realities named in new research led by young women through RiseUp! Asia Pacific, launching 27 August.

The research calls out the barriers young women face: patriarchal cultures that challenge their leadership, age-based bias from older generations, and gender inequality that often leads to violence.

It also highlights what creates change: safe spaces, strong feminist networks, families who support their daughters, and older women who choose to open doors for the next generation.

Be part of the launch and hear directly from the young women who shaped and led this research.

In humanitarian settings, young womenโ€™s leadership is essential to building stronger and more resilient communities. This week, we spotlight Young Women Championing Gender Equality and Climate Action, a YEF Phase II project led by YWCA ETHIOPIA in Debre Birhan. ๐Ÿ’œ๐ŸŒ

The project brings together gender equality, mental health, and climate action, supporting young women in IDP camps to strengthen their leadership, mental health resilience, environmental knowledge, and community health preparedness.

Through leadership training, renovated Safe Spaces, psychosocial support, and climate-action capacity building, Youth Lead Champions (YLCs) are gaining the skills and confidence to become change agents within their communities. The initiative aims to reach 750 young people aged 14โ€“30, creating opportunities for young people to learn, connect, lead, and take action. ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿค

The World YWCA launches Young Women's Leadership across the Regions of Asia and the Pacific in the Face of Major Challenges, a World YWCA RiseUp! study led by Dr Katrina Lee-Koo and Dr Eleanor Gordon.

Asia and the Pacific are home to more than 350 million young women. These regions face the world's highest rates of disaster, a legacy of conflict, and the frontlines of the climate crisis.
This study asks how these realities shape young women's leadership, and what makes it possible for them to lead in the face of major crises and beyond.
