Ending the Ebola disease outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo will require coordinated actions, but it is possible.

Here’s how:

🔍 Surveillance – To end the outbreak, we need to know where and how it’s spreading.

🚰 Water, sanitation and hygiene – Regular cleaning and disinfection helps prevent disease spread.

🤝 Community engagement – Working together with communities helps us share information and understand the outbreak better.

🛡️ Infection prevention and control – Strict protocols must be followed to prevent exposure with infected bodily fluids.

🏥 Patient care – People with Ebola disease need the best chance of recovery, by getting supportive care that is provided in a safe and respectful way.

In Mudug, central Somalia, families are travelling up to 270 kilometres to reach malnutrition treatment at the regional hospital. Healthcare facilities are closing within communities, forcing people to go to hospital for care that should be available closer to home.

It also means children are arriving later and sicker, complicating their recovery.

“Closing a clinic does not remove a single patient. It just sends them to the next facility.”

In Sudan, aid cuts have forced clinics to close. This is making the journey to reach care:
🔴 Longer
🔴 More expensive
🔴 More dangerous

When people do reach a hospital they are often in a worse condition after their travels, and that hospital may already be full.

Our teams are seeing that when there are fewer places to seek care, the pressure to provide care shifts to the facilities that remain — including ours.

It’s been 100 days since the Ebola disease outbreak was declared in Democratic Republic of Congo, and communities are not receiving adequate support to curb the deadly spread.

📢 “Treatment centres remain essential for saving lives, but this response needs more than extra beds.”

Many of the deaths from Ebola disease have occurred outside of treatment centres. This means people aren’t receiving the care they need, and the virus continues to spread before cases are detected.

Training for health workers and community leaders on case detection, referrals, and infection prevention and control measures must be urgently bolstered within communities affected by the outbreak.

🦠 Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global problem. Tackling it in conflicts is especially important because war amplifies the drivers of AMR. Oftentimes, conflict means people have:

🚫 Less immunity against diseases due to malnutrition and skipped vaccines.
🚫 Fewer opportunities to get the right diagnosis due to damaged tools.
🚫 Fewer chances of getting proper treatment due to damaged hospitals.

Alongside addressing the physical and psychological wounds resulting from conflict, MSF faces another more insidious threat to health following trauma injuries: antimicrobial-resistant infections.

Crippling humanitarian funding cuts are leaving refugees and host communities in Chad without sufficient food, water, or health assistance:

🚫 Humanitarian organisations cannot afford to give full clinical doses of therapeutic food to acute malnutrition patients.
🚫 Earlier this year, treatment for moderate acute malnutrition ran out for two months.

Meanwhile, we’ve seen a 30 per cent rise in child malnutrition at the hospital we support in Adré, and one in five pregnant and breastfeeding women we screened in the first six months of this year were acutely malnourished.

We’re calling on international donors to fund Chad’s 2026 response plans.

Children and pregnant women in Adré, Chad - especially those from the local community - are becoming malnourished as severe funding cuts impact on food aid supplies.
