It’s been 100 days since the Ebola disease outbreak was declared in Democratic Republic of Congo, and communities are not receiving adequate support to curb the deadly spread.

📢 “Treatment centres remain essential for saving lives, but this response needs more than extra beds.”

Many of the deaths from Ebola disease have occurred outside of treatment centres. This means people aren’t receiving the care they need, and the virus continues to spread before cases are detected.

Training for health workers and community leaders on case detection, referrals, and infection prevention and control measures must be urgently bolstered within communities affected by the outbreak.

Communities are not receiving enough support to contain the Ebola disease outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo.

🦠 Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global problem. Tackling it in conflicts is especially important because war amplifies the drivers of AMR. Oftentimes, conflict means people have:

🚫 Less immunity against diseases due to malnutrition and skipped vaccines.
🚫 Fewer opportunities to get the right diagnosis due to damaged tools.
🚫 Fewer chances of getting proper treatment due to damaged hospitals.

Alongside addressing the physical and psychological wounds resulting from conflict, MSF faces another more insidious threat to health following trauma injuries: antimicrobial-resistant infections.

Crippling humanitarian funding cuts are leaving refugees and host communities in Chad without sufficient food, water, or health assistance:

🚫 Humanitarian organisations cannot afford to give full clinical doses of therapeutic food to acute malnutrition patients.
🚫 Earlier this year, treatment for moderate acute malnutrition ran out for two months.

Meanwhile, we’ve seen a 30 per cent rise in child malnutrition at the hospital we support in Adré, and one in five pregnant and breastfeeding women we screened in the first six months of this year were acutely malnourished.

We’re calling on international donors to fund Chad’s 2026 response plans.

Children and pregnant women in Adré, Chad - especially those from the local community - are becoming malnourished as severe funding cuts impact on food aid supplies.

In the West Bank, violence and restrictions from Israeli occupation are shaping the daily lives of Palestinians:

🚫 People can’t safely travel to access medical care.
🚫 Leaving home risks arrest and administrative detention by the Israeli army.
🚫 Care that’s close to communities is dwindling as we had to suspend all mobile activities.

Israeli checkpoints and military and settler violence are restricting the movement of Palestinians in the West Bank, blocking their access to medical care.

One month on, the Ebola disease outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo is outpacing response efforts.

Multiple factors are necessary to contain the spread of the disease, like surveillance, diagnosis, contact tracing, and community engagement. Yet gaps persist in these areas, despite the recent scale-up in the response.
