🇱🇦 Finding TB where people live.

🏘️ In Lao PDR, Active Case Finding is bringing TB screening closer to communities, led by the National TB Center (NTC) together with provincial and district health authorities and local communities.

🫁 The first round is reaching 13 villages across Naxaythong and Sangthong Districts of Vientiane Capital, bringing portable digital chest X-ray and AI-assisted screening closer to people who may otherwise face barriers to timely TB detection.

🤝 But screening for TB is only the first step. NTC and local health teams are working together to link people with presumptive TB to further diagnosis, treatment follow-up and contact investigation.

📍 Two rounds of community-based Active Case Finding are being supported from October 2026, with the next round planned for Vientiane Province.

🇯🇵 This work is supported by Stop TB Partnership, with funding support from Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (厚生労働省).

Can TB programmes test more people on the same budget? Pooled testing says “yes”.

The pooled testing evaluation that Stop TB-led in Start4All combined up to four sputum samples in one test on existing GeneXpert machines. It cut test use by 51% and halved the cost per person tested.

Congregate settings significantly increase the risk of TB transmission and unfortunately, people deprived of liberty (PDLs) often face limited access to essential healthcare.

With support from TB REACH, our partner in the Philippines, TB HIV Innovations and Clinical Research Foundation Corp., is implementing near-point-of-care (NPOC) TB testing using tongue and sputum swabs at Silang Municipal Jail, in Cavite, Philippines. This is the first implementation of this NPOC approach in a prison setting.

By bringing testing directly to PDLs, the approach aims to shorten the diagnostic pathway and enable TB diagnosis and treatment initiation on the same day.

A big week in Viet Nam!
This week saw the official launch of TBpeople Vietnam! Yet another country building a stronger voice of TB survivors to support country efforts ending TB.
We’re also pleased to see this happen alongside the launch of the OneImpact Community Support in Viet Nam, creating a new channel for people affected by TB and other lung diseases to access information, connect with services and share feedback on their care.
Made possible with support from the Stop TB Partnership’s Challenge Facility for Civil Society, this milestone demonstrates the power of community-led monitoring to strengthen accountability and improve the quality of TB services.

🔬Pakistan: New evidence on near point-of-care TB testing

In a new study supported by Stop TB Partnership’s TB REACH our partners Dopasi Foundation in collaboration with CDC Sindh and Sindh Provincial Reference Laboratory evaluated the performance of the Pluslife MiniDock MTB test under routine programme conditions in Karachi, Pakistan.

The study found that:
✅ When used with sputum swabs, MiniDock MTB sensitivity was comparable to that of Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra and performed better than smear microscopy.
✅ Tongue swabs offered a simple, non-invasive testing option, but their sensitivity was lower than sputum-based testing and comparable to microscopy
✅ 99% of all participants were able to produce sputum specimen for testing. Therefore, the findings support sputum as the preferred specimen when it is available
✅ The proportion of invalid results is low , supporting the operational feasibility of using the tests under routine programme conditions and in facilities closer to where people seek care.

Near point-of-care tests could expand access to molecular TB testing in primary healthcare facilities and community settings, replacing smear microscopy where other molecular tests are not readily available and helping decentralize molecular testing closer to communities. However, more innovation is needed to enable these NPOC devices to also test rapidly for drug resistance and guide appropriate treatment.
