WHY FOSTERING MATTERS — AND WHY WE NEED YOU
There’s a side of rescue that people don’t always see.
Everyone loves the puppies. The kittens. The happy, social dogs who immediately crawl into your lap and act like they’ve always belonged there.
But rescue isn’t always like that.
Sometimes, the animal who needs you most is the one who needs space, patience, quiet and time.
And those are often the hardest foster placements to find.
When a rescue doesn’t have enough foster homes, animals can’t come into care when they need us. And when someone offers to foster and then has to back out at the last minute, it can leave a rescue scrambling to find another safe place for an animal who has nowhere else to go.
We understand that life happens. We truly do. ❤️
But the reality is that rescues depend on foster homes. Without fosters, we cannot save them.
And right now, we have a beautiful girl who desperately needs someone willing to give her exactly what she needs.
🐱 Meet Maple.
Maple is approximately 1–2 years old and has recently finished raising her kittens. She is currently in the process of drying up after weaning them, and she has had a LOT happen in her young life.
She is nervous and overwhelmed, and what she needs right now isn’t someone expecting an instant love bug.
She needs quiet.
She needs a safe room where she can decompress.
She needs someone who can simply sit nearby, speak softly, and let her decide when she’s ready to come closer.
She may hide.
She may take time.
She may not want to be touched right away.
And that’s okay. ❤️
Maple has not yet been to the vet because we don’t want to subject her to repeated stressful experiences. Our plan is to make her veterinary appointment as much of a one-and-done visit as possible. She will be spayed and vaccinated in approximately two weeks, and our rescue veterinarian will be there to care for her as needed.
We are looking for a long-term foster home for Maple, with the possibility of foster-to-adopt for the right person.
But this is the important part:
Not every foster situation is right for every animal.
Sometimes an animal needs a very specific type of home. A quiet household. Someone who can be patient. Someone who can give them space. Someone who can roll with the unexpected without becoming overwhelmed by every little change or setback.
If we ask questions about your home, your routine, other animals, children, or your experience, it isn’t because we’re judging you.
And if we decide that a particular placement isn’t the right fit, we aren’t turning you down as a person.
We’re trying to find the environment that we believe will give that specific animal the best chance of succeeding.
Because fostering isn’t about finding the perfect foster home.
It’s about finding the right foster home for that animal.
With Maple, that means someone who understands that this may take time. Someone who won’t panic because she hides for a few days. Someone who won’t expect constant progress. Someone who can take a breath, give her space, reach out to us when they genuinely need support, and trust the process.
This type of foster can be harder.
It’s not a kitten.
It’s not a puppy.
There may not be immediate cuddles, cute videos and instant gratification.
It takes patience. It takes understanding. And sometimes, it takes a willingness to simply sit quietly in a room and let an animal learn that they are finally safe.
But imagine what the outcome could be. ❤️
The cat who finally comes out of hiding.
The cat who starts sleeping out in the open.
The cat who accepts a gentle touch.
The cat who realizes that people can be trusted.
And eventually, hopefully, the cat who chooses her person and gets to live the happy, safe life she always deserved.
We provide the support.
We provide the veterinary care, supplies and guidance needed. You provide the safe space, patience and understanding.
You don’t have to “fix” Maple.
You simply need to be willing to let her become comfortable on her terms.
Fostering isn’t always easy.
It isn’t always fun.
It isn’t always Instagram-worthy.
But it is one of the most important things you can do in rescue.
You don’t have to foster the easiest animal. You just have to be willing to help the one who needs you.
