WHO WE ARE:

Named after B.C.'s provincial flower, Dogwood is a people-powered organization driven by a shared love of place. We bring together voters from all over the political spectrum to work on the urgent challenges facing our home. Our staff work out of Victoria, Courtenay and Burnaby, anchoring volunteer organizing teams in dozens of key ridings. The goal is to build a grassroots base of engaged citizens ready to take action outside of the existing party system. WHAT WE DO:

We look for tipping points: places where enough citizen pressure can rewrite a law, reverse a bad decision or convince a politician to take a stronger position. We work steadily to identify thousands of like-minded voters in key constituencies. We build organizing teams made up of local people committed to each other and the place they live. When the moment is right, Dogwood channels large-scale citizen action both online and offline. This might be an election, a leadership race, court case or regulatory review. The rest of the year we train organizers, build capacity among our allies and serve as a watchdog on our campaign issues. WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT:

We only take on issues in our home province. We pick battles that fit into our broader strategy to transform politics in B.C. And once we commit to a campaign, we maintain focus for as many years are necessary until we win. Dogwood is probably best known for the No Tankers campaign. Since 2007, we've helped prevent a massive expansion of carbon pollution and oil tanker traffic on the West Coast. Our supporters are definitely concerned about climate change and oil spills. But we don’t just work to protect the environment. What’s at stake in all our campaigns is self-determination: the right of local people to have a say over what happens in their home. Our core belief is that decisions should be made by the people who have to live with them. Often that means taking on powerful CEOs, far-off bureaucrats and unaccountable politicians. The good news is if there’s any place where organized people can win back control over their shared future, it’s British Columbia. First Nations across most of the province never signed away control of the land, giving Indigenous legal systems real weight. citizens share a unique love of place and spirit of civic engagement. In combination, these two forces are starting to change how power is won and wielded in British Columbia – and could even shape the future of the global climate. We see the potential in our conversations every day.

B.C. should be a wealthy province, yet we keep sliding deeper into debt. why can’t we keep emergency rooms open, or fix potholes? because our politicians negotiated a bad deal.

right now, B.C. is producing record amounts of natural gas and LNG. yet the revenue we get from this public resource keeps shrinking. we now collect more money from the BC Lottery than we do from the entire gas industry.

meanwhile, B.C.’s historic budget deficit got even bigger in September. Premier David Eby admitted he overestimated the money we’d get from the gas industry by $1.5 billion. the BC NDP’s math mistake blew another huge hole in our province’s finances.

Eby’s government promised to collect 50 per cent of the profits from the gas we sell. that’s entirely fair, since we own the resource. yet after years of lobbying, these global gas companies have whittled us down to 11 per cent. we’re broke, while they bank record profits – and more of B.C. burns every year.

it gets worse. starting January 1, even lower gas royalty rates are set to kick in. we can’t fix our province if we give away our wealth to foreign companies. and we’ll never make progress on climate if we keep subsidizing gas industry profits. tell B.C.’s next premier to charge a fair price for our LNG: https://dgwd.ca/4yzoKTO

last week, the B.C. government announced they’re suing OpenAI over its alleged role in the Tumbler Ridge mass shooting – yet they also want to give tech giant Telus 126 MW of scarce, publicly-owned clean electricity to power two mega AI data centres in Vancouver.

but despite the province (and the feds) going all in on a dangerous, climate-destroying technology, there is an unlikely hero standing between the hyperscale data centre “gold rush” and an increasingly AI-skeptical public: municipal governments.

while AI adoption may be framed by boosters as “inevitable,” the brick-and-mortar buildings that Telus wants to build in Vancouver are bound by municipal zoning laws. In fact, one of Telus's proposed projects in Vancouver is on hold right now, because so many people signed up to speak at its rezoning hearing that the final decision was punted until after the October 17 municipal election.

Migrants did not create these crises. Migrants are struggling through them too.

But instead of taking on the rich and powerful, politicians are blaming migrants, cutting immigration and changing the rules on people who were invited to build their lives here.

“Double Double Majority” – that’s what right-wing school board-only political party ParentsVoice BC is calling their 2026 B.C. municipal election strategy to elect the majority of trustees on a majority of the province’s school boards.

ParentsVoice was founded by an anti-abortion activist and Kerry-Lynne Findlay’s former campaign manager in the lead-up to the 2022 municipal elections. they ran a slate of candidates who’d all, according to one of the co-founders, “had their red pill moment.” during the last election, numerous candidates held explicitly homophobic and transphobic views and made claims that “Caucasian” students are harmed by learning Indigenous history. they call these issues “trends of the day.”

but truth, equity and reconciliation are not trends. and if ParentsVoice is able to build momentum this fall, it will affirm that the way to win power in B.C. is by stirring up fear and anger, and pitting neighbours against one another.

the LNG industry was sold to British Columbians as a grand tradeoff. sure, we’ll have to live with more fracking and flaring, rare cancers, poisoned water and higher emissions. but at least we’ll be rich!

we’re now learning that was one big lie.

after a decade of promises from politicians and CEOs, B.C.’s budget projections show the money finally starting to roll in next year. the problem is, those projections are completely wrong. the BC NDP government now admits it overestimated gas revenue by $1.5 billion.

B.C. is about to lock in a new gas royalty framework that will reduce our share of industry profits even further. This rigged formula is set to kick in January 1.

unlike every other business operating in B.C., the gas industry pays almost nothing in taxes. instead they pay a small royalty fee on the gas they extract. and if the government signs off on this new royalty formula, the hole in our budget will get bigger and bigger.

the province collects more from liquor sales or the BC Lottery than we do from the gas industry. instead of funding public projects like schools and hospitals, the public is paying to build infrastructure for the gas industry, like dams and power lines. it’s completely backward.

luckily we have a new Finance Minister who has shown some backbone. when she was Energy Minister, Josie Osborne refused to sign off on the last unfair royalty formula the industry proposed. that’s why negotiations have dragged on until now.

now Osborne is under pressure to balance the budget and build a strong economy. But she can’t help families struggling with the cost of living, if all our resource wealth is flying into the pockets of foreign billionaires. scandal alert!! B.C. politicians keep promising a bonanza of public revenue from the gas industry. this year's budget made it look like the money was finally going to start rolling in … next year.

but a recent bombshell report from Stefan Labbé shows that a major budget error means the B.C. public is set to lose out on BILLIONS in projected revenue from the gas industry.

the BC Conservatives and the Greens are calling for an investigation into the bogus budget numbers – but there’s a bigger story here, and that’s the new royalty system, due to come in January first, that will lock in these billions of dollars in losses.

instead of taxing gas companies' billions in profits (like any other industry), B.C. uses an insanely complicated formula to calculate royalty payments on the gas itself – which the companies have gamed so they pay almost nothing to British Columbians.

why would the Premier agree to this? because right now, he’s trying to entice American billionaires and foreign oil companies to park their LNG factories on the B.C. coast. and they will only say yes to final investment decisions if the gas is, essentially, free.
