Dogwood BC

Dogwood BC Dogwood brings together British Columbians to reclaim power over our environment and democracy. Then we mobilize. And B.C. That’s what gives us hope.
(471)

WHO WE ARE:

Named after B.C.'s provincial flower, Dogwood is a people-powered organization driven by a shared love of place. We bring together voters from all over the political spectrum to work on the urgent challenges facing our home. Our staff work out of Victoria, Courtenay and Burnaby, anchoring volunteer organizing teams in dozens of key ridings. The goal is to build a grassroots base of en

gaged citizens ready to take action outside of the existing party system. WHAT WE DO:

We look for tipping points: places where enough citizen pressure can rewrite a law, reverse a bad decision or convince a politician to take a stronger position. We work steadily to identify thousands of like-minded voters in key constituencies. We build organizing teams made up of local people committed to each other and the place they live. When the moment is right, Dogwood channels large-scale citizen action both online and offline. This might be an election, a leadership race, court case or regulatory review. The rest of the year we train organizers, build capacity among our allies and serve as a watchdog on our campaign issues. WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT:

We only take on issues in our home province. We pick battles that fit into our broader strategy to transform politics in B.C. And once we commit to a campaign, we maintain focus for as many years are necessary until we win. Dogwood is probably best known for the No Tankers campaign. Since 2007, we've helped prevent a massive expansion of carbon pollution and oil tanker traffic on the West Coast. Our supporters are definitely concerned about climate change and oil spills. But we don’t just work to protect the environment. What’s at stake in all our campaigns is self-determination: the right of local people to have a say over what happens in their home. Our core belief is that decisions should be made by the people who have to live with them. Often that means taking on powerful CEOs, far-off bureaucrats and unaccountable politicians. The good news is if there’s any place where organized people can win back control over their shared future, it’s British Columbia. First Nations across most of the province never signed away control of the land, giving Indigenous legal systems real weight. citizens share a unique love of place and spirit of civic engagement. In combination, these two forces are starting to change how power is won and wielded in British Columbia – and could even shape the future of the global climate. We see the potential in our conversations every day.

phone a CIB board member and urge them not to fund Ksi Lisims LNG with a billion-dollar taxpayer loan! https://bit.ly/3PGIlQV

yesterday in Vancouver, Canada's energy minister Tim Hodgson - a former Goldman Sachs executive - called a news conference to celebrate an LNG deal: after months of pleading by Hodgson’s department, the German government agreed to buy one million tonnes of LNG from the proposed American-owned Ksi Lisims terminal, starting in the 2030s. it’s a symbolic amount of gas, transported 18,000 km, at high cost. and it does nothing to break German dependence on U.S. companies for its energy supply.

but the Liberals just want to signal momentum. overnight, Ksi Lisims LNG went from 33% of its terminal capacity spoken for, to 42%, which gives Hodgson enough political cover to try to force through a massive public loan for Ksi Lisims LNG, in order to de-risk this project for Wall Street.

if taxpayers chip in at least a billion in cash, plus a new transmission line, plus discount electricity, Hodgson believes that will convince Blackstone and Apollo to greenlight the project. now he’s holding the Canada Infrastructure Bank upside-down by its ankles and shaking -- a $35-billion government fund that's supposed to be for public transit and renewable energy.

but there are still ten people in Canada who could stop this: the CIB board, a collection of engineers, lawyers, infrastructure experts and public servants.

they need support from Canadians to do the right thing and block this loan. phone one of them today, and urge them not to fund Ksi Lisims LNG with our money. folks have already made 250 calls -- some go to voicemail, but that's a good way to get your points across. please join them in speaking your mind straight to a decision-maker, respectfully. ❤️‍🔥https://bit.ly/3PGIlQV

😩 Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim and his ABC party rolled back significant climate policy in Vancouver this week.

despite 72 people showing up to speak in opposition and a rally outside City Hall, the ABC-majority council voted to pause the Energize Vancouver plan – a flagship set of regulations to make buildings carbon-free – and bring fracked methane gas back into buildings.

this was the second time in two years Ken Sim attempted to repeal a core Vancouver climate policy. this time, he finally got his way.

buildings generate 60% of Vancouver’s carbon pollution, and electric heating is cheaper than gas in the long run. so why does Ken Sim care so much about keeping Vancouverites hooked up to fracked gas? because FortisBC and other oil and gas lobbyists🛢️keep pressuring him.

in the months leading up to yesterday's vote, at least one ABC councillor met with a rep from FortisBC, and another appears to have met with ResourceWorks – the same lobbyists who pushed for the 2024 gas ban reversal.

we need a mayor and councillors that listen to the people of Vancouver – not their industry buddies. at least B.C.’s municipal elections are just five months away. 😏😏😏

saddle up, friends 🤠 China DOUBLED its solar exports in March, taking direct aim at America's LNG industry. and every day the U.S. fails to open the Strait of Hormuz, high prices for fossil fuels drive more customers right into China's arms. what's a middle power like 🇨🇦 to do?? that depends whose energy plan we think will prevail: the oil-soaked military empire 🦅or the authoritarian electric factory state 🐲. if you think giving billions of our tax dollars to American LNG investors is a bad way to find out, e-mail the Canada Infrastructure Bank and tell them right now: https://bit.ly/4dDb9BP

⚠️⚠️⚠️URGENT: Ken Sim is trying to gut Vancouver’s climate progress⚠️⚠️⚠️

🚨 the deadline to sign up to speak at council is at 5 pm TODAY, MAY 19TH. SIGN UP TO SPEAK: https://vancouver.ca/your-government/request-to-speak-at-meeting-form-4.aspx

🤝 in 2024, hundreds of us stood together to stop a surprise attempt at Vancouver City Council to bring fossil gas back into our new buildings. we won then, but the threat is back.

‼️ TOMORROW, May 20, Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim is introducing a surprise motion that would dismantle the pillars of Vancouver’s climate leadership. by burying these changes in a motion about "housing affordability," he’s hoping we won't notice that the ABC is actually locking us into decades of higher costs, indoor air pollution, and climate risk.

💸 if enough of us raise our voices, we can protect our city’s climate progress and push back against fossil fuel lobbying and corporate greed.

WAYS YOU CAN HELP STOP THIS!

🗣️ sign up to speak (most impactful!)
council needs to hear from real residents, not just industry lobbyists. sign up to speak (in-person or by phone) at the Wednesday meeting – you’ll get 3 minutes. you don’t need to be an expert. register using the City of Vancouver Speaker Form (select “Motion 8” and choose “oppose”) HERE: https://vancouver.ca/your-government/request-to-speak-at-meeting-form-4.aspx. the deadline to sign up is TODAY, Tuesday, May 19 at 5 pm PT. once you register, city staff will send your number in line and instructions to dial in.

🚨🚨tell Canada Infrastructure Bank board members: no billion-dollar bailout for American LNG: https://bit.ly/43ecF8p

🛢️last Friday, Mark Carney met with Danielle Smith in Ottawa to iron out the final details of their oil pipeline deal.

♟️is Carney playing 4D chess? or does he, perhaps, just want to build a bunch of pipelines?

😬after all, Carney is giving the oil industry its entire list of demands — axing the carbon tax, fast-tracking fossil fuel terminals, scrapping environmental protections, rubberstamping an oil pipeline from Alberta to the west coast — all policy movies Pierre Poilievre promised in last year’s election. Mr. Values is decimating climate policy and environmental protections to such a brazen degree that ex Liberal Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault just declared him “worse than Harper.”

🇺🇸one of the fossil fuel terminals Carney wants to fast-track is Ksi Lisims LNG — a 100% American-owned project proposed for B.C.’s north coast, that would be built abroad with Korean and Chinese steel, and that hasn’t been able to secure any new shipping contracts for more than a year. Carney, being a banker, is looking to lower the risk for Western LNG, the Texas-based shell company behind Ksi Lisims — so he’s pressuring the Canada Infrastructure Bank to bail out the company with a billion-dollar taxpayer loan. that’s right – Carney wants to give your tax dollars to an American company backed by a mega Trump donor so they can extract “stable, secure” Canadian gas to sell to Asian markets at a significant mark-up.

🛢️which is, of course, exactly what Danielle Smith wants to do with her oil pipeline.

tell the Canada Infrastructure Bank board members, who oversee a crown corporation that is supposed to build public transit, clean energy and housing, to stand up to Mark Carney and Danielle Smith’s fossil fuel agenda. https://bit.ly/43ecF8p

🚨🚨🚨 Canada Infrastructure Bank board members will decide ANY DAY whether to bail out the struggling American-owned Ksi Lisims LNG terminal with a massive taxpayer loan. hit the first link in our bio to tell them to vote NO! 🚨🚨🚨

🥊 last week, Reuters reported that Wall Street private equity firms KKR, Blackstone and Apollo Global Management are all vying to buy Shell’s 40% stake in LNG Canada.

🇺🇸 KKR, and its intelligence chief David Petraeus, already own a controlling stake in the Coastal GasLink pipeline, which supplies LNG Canada. 80 miles north, the Ksi Lisims LNG proposal is backed by Apollo and Blackstone, whose billionaire CEOs Marc Rowan and Stephen Schwarzman are big supporters of the guy currently running the White House and its American Energy Dominance doctrine. Dave, Marc, and Steve want LNG Canada because gas supply is choked off at the Strait of Hormuz, and they believe they can sell “stable, secure” North American LNG to poor countries in Asia for higher prices.

🍁 this is the American Energy Dominance doctrine – seize control of fossil fuel supply lines and strongarm allies into purchasing American gas... or Canadian gas. we have a huge supply, and our governments are more than happy to sell it dirt cheap to foreign LNG companies.

💸 both Ksi Lisims and LNG Canada Phase 2 have been selected to be “fast-tracked” by Mark Carney, which just means the government will inject them with a massive hit of public cash to help them along to their final investment decision. and the Libs are turning over every couch cushion to scrounge for loonies – Carney’s recently announced Sovereign Wealth Fund would encourage Canadians to invest their savings in a giant slush fund to get fossil fuel projects off the ground. and right now, the Liberals are pressuring the Canada Infrastructure Bank to bail out Ksi Lisims with a billion-dollar taxpayer loan. click the first link in our bio to tell the board to protect our public money from billionaires in Trump’s inner circle!!!!!!

05/01/2026

💸 comment “bank” to send a letter to the independent board members of the Canada Infrastructure Bank and urge them to vote NO to a billion-dollar bailout for the Ksi Lisims LNG project!!!! 💸

💰 on Monday, Carney announced the creation of Canada’s first Sovereign Wealth Fund, to prop up private “projects of national interest” with public money.

✈️ think of the Sovereign Wealth Fund like World War two Victory Bonds – but instead of buying government debt to pay for Liberator bombers, Canadians can empty their piggy banks to help foreign billionaires build private projects to extract wealth from... us?

🇺🇸 projects like the Ksi Lisims LNG terminal – a 100% American-owned, Wall St billionaire-backed, polluting fossil fuel terminal that is facing multiple legal challenges, would be built in South Korea, and can’t secure any private loans or buyers.

🦹‍♂️ this project can’t survive without a massive cash transfusion from Canadian taxpayers. Canada’s SWF isn’t set up yet, so the American billionaires behind Ksi Lisims have another plan in the meantime: hijack the Canada Infrastructure Bank.

🏡 the Canada Infrastructure Bank is a Crown corporation created eight years ago, with a mandate to invest our money in transit, housing and clean energy projects across the country. this is the piggy bank the Wall Street CEOs behind Ksi Lisims plan to smash.

💥 if the U.S. private equity vampires get inside the Canada Infrastructure Bank, they will drain this pool of public money to fund their global fossil fuel expansion plans. we have to warn the independent board members who oversee the Canada Infrastructure Bank’s investment decisions. they need to understand the financial and reputational risks of giving billions of public dollars to this Wall Street project. comment “bank” to send them a letter!!!!

04/23/2026

during the LNG: Not in Our National Interest week of action, Canadians rallied alongside Indigenous leaders in five cities across the country (Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver and Victoria) to tell the federal government: NO public $$ for foreign-owned LNG projects. a HUGE shout out to everyone who hit the streets, painted murals, made signs, chanted, drummed, sang, and made our collective demand known. 🫰💥❤️‍🔥

Ksi Lisims LNG and LNG Canada Phase II have both been designated by the Carney Liberals as "Projects of National Interest," meaning they could receive billions of taxpayer dollars in support. but are these projects REALLY in our national interest?

these projects DO NOT...
❌ align with Canada's clean energy goals (LNG is a fossil fuel with a climate impact that's worse than coal)
❌ make economic sense - Canadian LNG is high cost and late to market, future markets for LNG are unstable, and the war in Iran is accelerating the transition to renewables
❌ reduce our dependence on the US (Ksi Lisims is a 100% American-owned project)
❌ create long-term jobs (Ksi Lisims LNG will be built abroad with Korean steel and floated to B.C.),
❌ have the support of many Indigenous communities.

there are plenty of other nation-building projects that would boost our economy, make us more resilient in the face of Trump’s chaos, and put us on a path to a cleaner, safer future. the federal government will decide which projects to invest in very soon, so we have a short window to tell them: no billions for American billionaires.
