Earthroots

Earthroots A grassroots environmental organization dedicated to the protection of Ontario's species and spaces

Earthroots has been on the front lines of wilderness conservation since 1986 when our predecessor organization, the Temagami Wilderness Society (TWS), was formed. The TWS was created to fight for the preservation of rare old-growth red and white pine forests in the Temagami region of northern Ontario. After campaign success in Temagami, we changed our name to Earthroots (1991) and broadened our ma

ndate beyond the Temagami issue. Earthroots is a strong advocate for wilderness preservation in Ontario, combining grassroots campaign strategies with effective research and educational programs. We work in coalition with other conservation organizations, coordinating strategies to move issues forward. Earthroots uses many techniques to gain increased protection for Ontario's wild spaces and the wildlife that live in them; these include public education and mobilization, advocacy, research, media awareness, and peaceful activism. We have found that using all these tools together is an effective approach to achieving real results on the ground. Our current campaigns are:
Oak Ridges Moraine / Greenbelt
Temagami / Wolf Lake
Wild Rivers and Watersheds
Parks and Protected Areas
Biodiversity
Wildlife: Wolves, Woodland Caribou, Double-crested Cormorants

Caught on our Eyes in the Forest wildlife camera. A deer letting loose and playing in the forest like nobody's watching. Moments like these remind us that Ontario's wild spaces are full of life, wonder and personalities all their own. Every patch of protected forest gives wildlife the freedom to simply be wild.

Temagami’s forests are not empty land waiting to be exploited. They are living ecosystems that sustain wildlife, Indigenous cultures, clean water, recreation, tourism, and climate stability. Protecting Temagami means recognizing that some places have greater value standing wild than cut, mined, or paved.

Every road pushed deeper into wilderness leaves a scar. Every protected forest becomes a promise. Temagami represents one of the last opportunities in Ontario to choose long-term ecological protection over short-term industrial pressure. We still have time to get this right but only if people speak up now.

They're not just city dwellers. Our Eyes in the Forest camera caught these raccoons wandering through an Ontario forest.

There are very few places left in Ontario where silence, darkness, wild shorelines, and ancient forests still dominate the landscape. Temagami is one of them. Protecting it is not about stopping progress, it is about deciding what kind of future we want to leave behind.
