The findings are in. And they’re clear.

Since deciding against a Pickering Airport and promising to transfer the vast majority of the remaining Transport Canada holdings (a.k.a. Pickering Lands) to Rouge National Urban Park in 2025, the federal government has undertaken required public consultation on the future of the lands.

The findings? The public is largely in favour of transferring the Pickering Lands to Rouge National Urban Park, with Rouge expansion, conservation and agriculture identified as priorities.

But the government’s ultimate decision is not bound by these findings, and a powerful minority of stakeholders are still pushing for unnecessary commercial development. We need to keep the pressure on and make sure the Pickering Lands are transferred to Rouge.

On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we acknowledge the history and diverse lived experiences of Indigenous Peoples. It is our collective responsibility to build a just and equitable society with a healthy natural world at the heart of it. This year we want to encourage people do something meaningful to them to mark the day however they can.

Here are three suggestions from us:

🧡 Join in and listen to The Yellowhead Institute’s The Right to Truth on Sept. 30 from 3-5pm. Register here: https://buff.ly/XQRkig4

🧡 Listen to Jeronimo Kataquapit of Attawapiskat talk about the weaponization of regional assessments in Bill C-39, An Act respecting certain measures to strengthen the economy. This bill was tabled on Monday Sept 21 by the federal government. We’ll have more to say about Bill C-39 in coming days: https://buff.ly/KF1asJe

In the 1960s and ’70s, the Dryden Paper Mill dumped about nine tonnes of mercury into the English-Wabigoon River system. More than 60 years later, Grassy Narrows First Nation and Wabaseemoong Independent Nations are still living with the devastating impacts.

“We're losing our people so quickly, both communities,” says Sherry Ackabee, Grassy Narrows First Nation Chief. “We shouldn't have to beg for this.”

Thousands took to the streets in Toronto this week to demand action from the federal and provincial government. Read more on this decades-long fight for justice: https://buff.ly/9UCCJNj

ICYMI More than 30 environmental organizations are calling on the federal government to remove a provision in Bill C-5, which allows the federal government to exempt major projects deemed to be in the national interest from important protections under the Species at Risk Act, including safeguards against activities that could threaten a species’ survival or recovery.

We’re standing up for at risk wildlife and calling on the federal government to do the same. Read the full letter here: https://bit.ly/4dz3vcj

P.S. We’re also digesting the bad news from Monday with the poison pills inserted into Bill C-39. Our commitment to the natural world remains strong even as the federal government rolls back protections.

The pitchbook unveiled last week at the Canada Investment Summit 2026 revealed another inconvenient truth for Premier Ford. There isn’t a Ring of Fire mine on the horizon.

This graphic shows just how early Juno Corp and Wyloo’s projects are in the mining cycle.

🪨 Juno Corp describes its Ring of Fire project as an “early-stage mineral exploration discovery” in the resource definition drilling stage, and says it is seeking investors with 10+ year investment horizons.

🪨 Wyloo says its Blackbird chromite project requires "further early exploration activities to determine viability to warrant additional, multi-year, technical studies and environmental baseline prior to determining resource potential."

TLDR: the two main companies in the Ring of Fire acknowledge that they are a long way from being shovel ready. Despite this, Ontario is charging ahead with plans that put these globally significant wetlands and rivers at risk.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Canada can develop critical minerals in a way that is consistent with our values and actually leaves us stronger, without weakening nature.
