Tangled Art + Disability

Tangled Art + Disability Tangled Art + Disability is an organization that brings together all kinds of people and practices to explore art, culture and disability.

"A TANGLE IS NOT A KNOT - IT CAN BE UNDONE OR REMAIN HAPPILY TANGLED. TANGLES ARE MESSY AND IMPERFECT, BUT THEY ARE ALSO COMPLEX, INTRICATE, ORGANIC, EVEN DELIBERATE. TANGLES REPRESENT WHAT THIS ORGANIZATION DOES: WE BRING TOGETHER ALL KINDS OF PEOPLE AND PRACTICES. WE DON'T NECESSARILY HAVE CONSENSUS ABOUT OUR IDENTITY, DISABILITY POLITICS, OR EVEN WHAT DISABILITY ARTS IS; AND YET WE COME TOGETHE

R, MESSILY, BUT INTENTIONALLY SO." -Local artist and Tangled Board Member, Eliza Chandler

"For over ten years, Abilities Arts Festival has developed and promoted the work of artists with disabilities, first through its workshops, master classes and special events. We've grown over the last decade along with our community, and we knew the time had come for a new name and a new look - one that captures the vibrant and engaged spirit of the communities we serve. We hope you'll join us as we launch this exciting phase of our exploration of art, culture and disability. Our 2013-2014 season offers a feast of opportunities to 'tangle' with brilliant artists, bold ideas and a world of difference." - Executive Director, Rina Fraticelli

By forefronting the worldview and culture of her Indigenous communities, nehiyaw and Michif artist Adele ᒪᐢᑿᓱᐤᐏᐢᑵᐤ Arseneau has created an exhibit that places celebration and grief in devastating symmetry. These ᐁᐧᐢᑫᐧᐱᑖᑲᐣ wîskwêpitâkan: Sacred Bundles - one for every school named in the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement are nestled in the soft fur of animal hides, returning the sacred bundle of Indigenous children to their culture from which they were stolen. Each of these lives are represented in beauty and vibrancy, so we may witness what violence destroys and life embodies in every tihkinākan.

May these ongoing events ever remain in our collective consciousness.

✨Upcoming Exhibition✨

ਨਾਲ-ਨਾਲ (Naal-Naal) by Pree Rehal

🗓️March 6, 2026 - May 1, 2026

🎉Opening Reception: March 6, 2026

Pree Rehal’s work emerges from a practice uplifted by community-based arts spaces, peer mentorship, and self-directed learning—shaped by years of making alongside Disabled, chronically ill, immunocompromised, Deaf, and 2SQTBIPOC kin. Through shared projects, mutual aid, and creative survival, Rehal crips the myth of the independent artist, privileging shared process over singular authorship and kinship over productivity.

Working across textiles, puppets, zines, audio, film, and installation, this exhibition grows out of a “Do-It-Together” culture rather than formal institutions. Zines, in particular, act as both medium and method: accessible, intimate, and deeply political.

ਨਾਲ-ਨਾਲ (Naal-Naal) pushes back against the idea that COVID is something we can simply “move on” from. For many Disabled, chronically ill, and immunocompromised people, masking and vigilance were never new or temporary—they’ve always been part of how we survive. As mask mandates drop, clean air is deprioritized, and virtual options disappear, Disabled communities are once again expected to take on the risk. Making Community holds space for the grief, frustration, and exhaustion that come with that reality, without letting go of softness, joy, humour, or care.

This is a solo exhibition rooted in multitudes. It insists that Disabled community is not only surviving, but still imagining, still connecting, and still here.

Alt Text: Close-up of a colourful textile artwork made from layered sheer fabrics in greens, oranges, pinks, and golds, with embroidered floral and leaf motifs. White text reading “ਨਾਲ-ਨਾਲ (Naal-Naal)” appears over the fabric. The textures and translucent layers create a soft, patchwork-like surface.

Crip Canada: A Decade of Political Engagement

Feb. 20-May 23 2026

Canada House, Trafalgar Square, London, UK.

In 2016, Tangled Art + Disability opened Canada’s first gallery dedicated to exhibiting Mad, Deaf, and disabled artists within Toronto’s legendary arts hub, 401 Richmond. Ten years later, Crip Canada: A Decade of Political Engagement reflects on a decade of transformation, marking Tangled Art Gallery’s establishment as what founding Artistic Director Eliza Chandler calls “a site of political engagement,” where disability culture and access aesthetics are inseparable from artistic innovation.

The artists gathered here—Persimmon Blackbridge, Peter Owusu-Ansah, Vanessa Dion Fletcher, Michel Dumont, David Bobier (VibraFusionLab), Olivia Brouwer, and Alexander Stuber from BEING Studio—each work from within disability culture, drawing on embodied knowledge, community, and collective making. Their practices span tactile mosaics, vibration-based sculpture, sound installation, and explorations of language and identity—together asserting disability as a generative force rather than a condition to be cured.

Crip Canada challenges the systemic ableism that has long framed disability through charitable or therapeutic lenses, and that continues to shape the mainstream art world. In its place, the exhibition positions disability arts within what British artist Yinka Shonibare (CBE) calls “the last avant-garde”—a movement redefining art’s political and aesthetic possibilities through interdependence, access, and care. Through Deaf-led approaches, tactile encounters, relaxed environments, and vibration-based works, Crip Canada shows how access beyond compliance transforms both who enters the gallery and how art itself is conceived and experienced.

Anchored in what Tangled’s Director of Programming, Sean Lee, calls the crip horizon—a politics of futurity that imagines worlds not yet here—the exhibition embraces the generative disruptions disability brings. By expanding access as a creative practice, Crip Canada not only advances conversations about inclusion but reshapes culture itself in felt and not-yet-knowable ways.
