When a child becomes seriously ill, school can seem like something that should wait.

But school may be one of the things a child wants to keep:
A favourite subject.
Friends to learn alongside.
Something to work toward when so much else has changed.

On World Teachers’ Day, Katie Doering, our Chief Program Officer and School Principal, reflects on the expertise behind making learning possible for children receiving treatment and their siblings.

At Ronald McDonald House Toronto, we want to say a big thank you to our educators — and the donors, volunteers and families who support their work. You help children keep their interests, friendships and ambitions in view.

Read Katie’s piece, “Keeping the future in view.”

Learning continues beyond September 30 at the Ronald McDonald House Toronto School.

Yesterday, on Orange Shirt Day, students explored Phyllis Webstad’s story and the significance of the orange shirt taken from her at residential school. They reflected on the “300 sleeps” she spent away from home.

Together, students walked 300 steps around our Tranquility Garden, counting in groups of 10, 50 and 100. Older students used calendars to explore how long 300 days would mean being separated from family.

This learning is part of the school year. Teachers share books by Indigenous authors, introduce Indigenous leaders, and guide age-appropriate conversations about history and current events.

In Health and Physical Education, students have also created a Medicine Wheel to explore the connections between physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. They return to these teachings throughout the year as they learn about balance and caring for themselves.

Listening to Indigenous stories and perspectives, and learning the history of residential schools, takes time. We’re grateful to our teachers for thoughtfully making space for this important learning throughout the school year.

Families come to Ronald McDonald House Toronto from many places. At our House and in our Family Rooms, we offer spaces where families can stay close while a child receives care.

On the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day, we remember the children taken from their families and communities through residential schools. We honour Survivors, the children who never returned home, and the families and communities who continue to live with the impacts.

Our House stands on the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee, the Wendat and the Mississaugas of the Credit, on land covered by Treaty 13 with the Mississaugas of the Credit. We are grateful to support families here.

This day asks us to listen to Survivors and Indigenous voices, to learn, and to consider how we welcome and support Indigenous children and families in our spaces. That learning must continue beyond today.

Every child matters.

❤️⛳ $79,162 raised for families!

For more than two decades, the Jordin Jewel Foundation in support of Ronald McDonald House Golf Tournament has brought the Thunder Bay community together around something very special: helping families stay close when a child needs medical care far from home.

This year marked the 26th tournament, raising an incredible $79,162 in support of Ronald McDonald House Toronto and Ronald McDonald House SWO — helping to provide families with a place to stay, warm meals, and a community of support during some of their hardest days.

What began in Jordin’s memory 27 years ago has grown into an extraordinary legacy of generosity — one that continues to make a very real difference for families from Thunder Bay and communities across Northwestern Ontario.

To the Jordin Jewel Foundation, the organizing committee, sponsors, golfers, volunteers and everyone who has helped build this event over the years: thank you.

Twenty six tournaments. Thousands of people brought together. And one very special legacy that continues to help families stay close. ❤️

What does it mean for a student to know there is a place for them before they even walk into the room?

At Ronald McDonald House Toronto School, that question shapes how our educators plan each day.

A phys-ed class might include a student using a wheelchair, a child navigating medical equipment or someone returning to movement after surgery or treatment. For teacher Zoe Webster, inclusion begins before the lesson does.

“It means creating an environment where every student feels that they were expected, welcomed and thought about before they even walked into the room.”

That thinking carries through the entire School — from lessons designed around different abilities and energy levels to the small details that tell a child someone has been listening to what they like, what makes them laugh and what helps them feel comfortable.

Last year, 116 students continued learning through Ronald McDonald House Toronto School programs. Every child arrived with different experiences, strengths and needs.

Our newest story takes you inside the classroom to see what inclusive education looks like here — and why being ready for the next student means thinking about them before they arrive.

Right now, gifts to our Back to School campaign are being matched dollar for dollar by Saputo, up to $40,000.

Read “Expected, welcomed and thought about” and help us be ready for the next student.

“Continuing in school tells me I have a future.”

A teenager once said this to Dr. Katie Doering, our Chief Program Officer and School Principal. She has carried those eight words with her ever since.

They capture why keeping school going matters when so much else in a child’s life has changed.

When medical care takes children away from their homes, communities and regular classrooms, school provides more than academic progress. It offers routine, friendship, independence and something important to look toward.

At Ronald McDonald House Toronto School, educators welcome students throughout the year and adapt learning around appointments, treatment, energy levels and individual needs. They create a place where children receiving care — and their siblings — can feel safe, supported and free to be themselves.

In our latest story, our educators share what they see when students settle in, find their confidence and recognize that they still have a future to build.

Read the story and help keep learning going.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

For families facing childhood cancer, a diagnosis can change everything — bringing long days of treatment, time away from home and uncertainty about what comes next.

For Courtney and Derek, that journey began when their son Nolan was diagnosed with JMML, a rare form of childhood leukemia.

While Nolan received life-saving medical treatment in Toronto, Ronald McDonald House Toronto gave their family a space to stay together — through the difficult days, the hopeful ones and the everyday moments in between.

Moments where Nolan could simply be a child and enjoy a sense of normalcy. Where siblings Bradley and Callie could spend time together as a family. Where parents Courtney and Derek could connect with other families who understood what they were going through, and where a warm, comforting meal was waiting after a long day.

“Shared tears and shared hope. Those friendships meant everything. They reminded us we weren’t alone.” — Courtney, Nolan’s mom

This month, we recognize every child facing cancer and the families beside them. No family should have to navigate their child’s cancer journey alone. Every family deserves to feel supported, cared for and close to one another through it all. 💛
