You may recognize Edmark as the anthem singer for Journey, but his connection to The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation Journey presented by Starlight Investments runs deeper.

A member of The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation staff team, this year marks Edmark’s third consecutive year singing at and participating in Journey. He carries the fire in honour of friends and family members who have faced cancer—those still with us and those we have lost. For Edmark, carrying the fire is about choosing hope and optimism, even in the face of darkness.

What he loves most about Journey is the incredible community it brings together. From coworkers who have become friends to participants of all ages, abilities, and even four-legged supporters, Journey is a powerful reminder of what can happen when people unite around a shared purpose.

As someone who hears firsthand from grateful patients, Edmark has seen the impact that cancer research funding can have on people's lives. He’s inspired by how far cancer research has come and excited for the breakthroughs still ahead.

Thank you, Edmark, for lending your voice, your passion, and your purpose to Journey.

This Cancer Survivors Day, Matt Saito's story is a celebration of hope, community, and the life-saving impact of cancer research and innovative treatments.

In the summer of 2024, fresh off an unforgettable trip to Europe, Matt returned home focused on completing Teachers College and building an exciting future. But by the fall, something felt off. Concerned, his girlfriend—a nurse and now his fiancĆ©e—insisted he seek medical attention.

After a series of tests and scans, Matt was diagnosed with Stage 2 B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma. By the time treatment began, doctors had discovered a massive tumor in his chest measuring approximately 11 by 17 centimetres. Within a month, Matt started an aggressive treatment plan that would define the next year of his life.

His days became centered around appointments, chemotherapy, and recovery. Over the course of six rounds of chemotherapy—more than 500 hours in total—and 18 rounds of radiation, Matt faced the physical and emotional challenges that come with cancer treatment.

Despite losing his hair, enduring the side effects of treatment, and putting many aspects of his life on hold, Matt remained determined. He completed his treatments, rang the bell, and today all signs point toward a full recovery.

Last year, Matt's Journey team raised more than $4,500, far exceeding their expectations, but for Matt, participating in Journey is about more than fundraising—it's about hope, gratitude, and giving back. More importantly, it reminded him just how much support surrounded him during the toughest chapter of his life.

Today, Matt shares the lessons he learned with his students and everyone around him. At just 27 years old when he was diagnosed, cancer was the last thing he expected. His experience has given him a new appreciation for health, community, and the importance of not taking any day for granted.

"I'm very happy to be alive, healthy, and able to give back," Matt says.

By supporting cancer research and participating in Journey, Matt hopes to help ensure that future patients have access to the same life-saving treatments and care that gave him the opportunity to continue building the life he loves.
