A historic milestone for the Ukrainian community of Prince Edward Island and for all who believe in remembering and preserving the truth.
On ๐ฆ๐ฒ๐ฝ๐๐ฒ๐บ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ฎ๐ฏ, ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฒ, the ๐๐ผ๐น๐ผ๐ฑ๐ผ๐บ๐ผ๐ฟ ๐ ๐ฒ๐บ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฎ๐น ๐ ๐ผ๐ป๐๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐ was installed at ๐๐ผ๐ป๐ณ๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ธ ๐ถ๐ป ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐ฟ๐น๐ผ๐๐๐ฒ๐๐ผ๐๐ป, ๐ฃ๐๐, establishing a permanent place of remembrance for the millions of Ukrainians who were deliberately starved to death during the Holodomor.
This moment marks the culmination of an extraordinary community effort that began in 2025 and brought together Ukrainians and friends of Ukraine across Prince Edward Island, Canada, Ukraine, and beyond.
The monument is particularly meaningful because it was created in Lviv, Ukraine, during Russiaโs ongoing war against Ukraine. Despite wartime challengesโincluding a drone attack, shortages of materials, and repeated disruptions to electricityโthe artists and craftspeople in Lviv continued their work. The completed monument then made its way thousands of kilometres from Ukraine to its permanent home on PEI.
The project would not have been possible without the dedication and generosity of countless individuals, organizations, foundations, government representatives, volunteers, and community members.
UCC - PEI extended its sincere gratitude to the Government of Prince Edward Island and the Legislative Assembly of PEI, the City of Charlottetown, the Canada-Ukraine Foundation, Shevchenko Foundation, Temerty Foundation, BCU Foundation, Ukrainian Canadian Congress โ National, Ukrainian Canadian Congress Educational Trust, Meest Canada, Ukrainian Credit Union, the Embassy of Ukraine in Canada, Ukraineโs Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications, and all those who contributed their time, expertise, financial support, and encouragement.
In addition they are deeply grateful to the artists and specialists in Ukraine who brought the monument to life, and to the many volunteers and community members whose efforts helped make this vision a reality.
The er****on of this monument is not the end of the journey. It is the beginning of a lasting place of remembrance and education.
It will stand as a testament to the victims of the Holodomor, a reminder of the importance of historical truth, and a legacy for future generations. It represents the Ukrainian community of PEI's commitment to ensuring that the history of the Holodomor is remembered and understood.
An official unveiling ceremony will be held in coming weeks, with details regarding the date, time, and ceremony to be announced soon.
