Late yesterday, the Federal Government released Canada’s first-ever National Strategy for Eye Care, a significant step forward for the millions of Canadians living with preventable or treatable eye conditions, and for the optometrists who care for them every day.

Vision health is fundamental to how Canadians live, work, and learn. Yet too many people, particularly those in rural and remote communities, Indigenous Peoples, and lower-income Canadians, face real barriers to accessing the eye care they need. This strategy acknowledges those gaps and sets a direction for addressing them.

June is Cataract Awareness Month, a time to learn about one of the leading causes of vision loss worldwide.

Regular comprehensive eye exams are essential for detecting cataracts early and monitoring changes in your vision. Symptoms may develop gradually and can include increased sensitivity to light, difficulty seeing at night, or needing frequent updates to your glasses prescription.

This Cataract Awareness Month, take a moment to prioritize your eye health and encourage your family and friends to do the same.

An eye exam is about more than just checking if you need glasses, it’s a key part of protecting your overall eye health.

During a comprehensive exam, your optometrist checks your vision clarity, eye pressure, and the health of your retina and optic nerve. It can also help detect early signs of eye conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and cataracts often before you notice any symptoms.

Eye exams can also uncover signs of other health issues such as diabetes or high blood pressure. Regular checkups help ensure your vision stays clear and your eyes stay healthy for years to come.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the leading causes of vision loss, especially in older adults. It affects central vision, making everyday activities like reading, driving, and recognizing faces more difficult.

The good news is that early detection can make a big difference. Regular eye exams can help catch signs of AMD early and allow for treatment and management options that may help slow vision loss.

If you notice changes in your vision, don’t ignore them — your eye health matters.

With Summer weather just around the corner and the sun shining, it can be easy to forget about the importance of Eye Health.

However, too much exposure to UV rays can harm the retina and increase the risk of long-term vision problems. The safest way to protect your eyes is to avoid staring at the sun, wear sunglasses with UV protection, and use proper eye protection during events like solar eclipses.

Taking simple steps now can help protect your vision for the future.

NLAO, the Government of NL and the Essilor Vision Foundation Canada has launched a new program to assist children who do not have insurance coverage for eye exams.

To be eligible, a child must be getting ready to attend Kindergarten, live in Newfoundland and Labrador, and have a valid MCP card.

Children rarely complain of vision problems, often because they are not aware of them. Optometrists are able to determine if a child can see clearly up close and at a distance and if the child’s eyes are working together properly.

Children’s eye exams are an important part of supporting healthy growth and development.

Clear vision helps children learn more effectively, build confidence, and fully participate in school and daily activities. The challenge is that many vision problems can be subtle and easily missed without a proper eye exam.

Regular check-ups allow eye care professionals to detect issues early and provide the right support when it matters most.
