Stretching from Hermitage Bay to Cape Ray, Newfoundland's South Coast is home to dramatic fjords, towering cliffs, sheltered inlets, and some of the province's most unique marine ecosystems.

The South Coast area provides important habitat for a wide variety of marine life, while also supporting exceptional seaweed and cold water coral diversity. The area also experiences Newfoundland and Labrador's largest tides, creating rich and productive coastal ecosystems that support rare and threatened species like the northern wolffish, as well as the south Newfoundland Atlantic salmon population.

The South Coast is a provincial treasure that supports biodiversity, fisheries, and opportunities for us to connect with and benefit from a thriving ocean. Ocean protection in this area would ensure not only a healthy marine ecosystem, but also a prosperous, sustainable future for the region.

How can you stand up for the South Coast? Send a letter to the provincial government using our handy template, or write our own!

Protecting the ocean isn't just good for nature - it's good for communities too!

A recent CPAWS study found that Canada's protected and conserved areas contribute billions of dollars to the economy through tourism, jobs, and visitor spending. Every dollar invested in protected areas generates additional economic activity, supporting businesses, accommodations, tour guides, restaurants, and local services. 🛥

For coastal regions, healthy marine ecosystems can attract visitors seeking wildlife, outdoor adventures, and unforgettable ocean experiences.

This Oceans Week, we’re celebrating the role that marine conservation plays in keeping our oceans productive, resilient, and full of life. 🐟💙

Healthy oceans are the foundation of robust fisheries, thriving coastal communities, and diverse marine ecosystems. When important marine habitats are protected, fish have safe places to feed, grow, and reproduce. Over time, this helps to maintain healthier fish populations and support more sustainable fisheries across the region.

Ocean conservation means not only protecting marine life, but also protecting the ecosystems that we depend on for food, work, recreation, and ecosystem services. When we protect the ocean, we are ensuring that future generations can continue to steward nature while benefiting from the ocean's provisions.

Thank you to everyone who joined us yesterday for the Mundy Pond cleanup!

Together, we removed 113.7 lbs of litter, helping protect local wildlife, improve water quality, and keep this important urban ecosystem clean and healthy.

A special thank you to all of our volunteers, Councillor Greg Noseworthy, and our funder, Canada Water Agency, for helping make this event a success. Every piece of litter removed makes a difference.

Join CPAWS NL for a cleanup of Mundy Pond Park as we work together to remove litter, protect freshwater habitat and urban wildlife, and care for one of St. John’s most important green spaces.

Councillor Greg Noseworthy will also be joining us in support of the cleanup and to chat with community members about caring for local green spaces.

🗓 Sunday, May 31, 2026
⏰ 10:00am – 11:00am
📍 Meet at the gravel parking lot

Cleanup supplies and garbage bags will be provided - just bring sturdy footwear and dress for the weather.

Mundy Pond is an important freshwater ecosystem and community green space, home to birds, plants, and wildlife right in the heart of the city of St. John's. Every piece of litter removed helps keep the pond healthier for both people and nature.

We hope to see you there! 🌿

🌊 Today is the International Day for Biological Diversity, and this year’s theme, “Acting locally for global impact”, is a reminder of the value of conservation close to home.

In Newfoundland and Labrador, protecting marine ecosystems means safeguarding critical habitat for seabirds, whales, cold-water corals, fish, and countless other species that are part of larger Atlantic and global ocean systems. From reducing marine debris to supporting marine protected areas and sustainable ocean management, local actions help strengthen biodiversity far beyond our coastlines.

We are all connected through biodiversity, as complex ecosystems provide the clean air and water, food, and climate stability that we depend on. Protecting these ecosystems means protecting our future🌎💙

Protecting both marine areas and community interests begins with understanding them. Check out this great piece by Dr. Evan Edinger, one of our Board Members.

"Ultimately, cancelling the feasibility study means not allowing questions to be asked, not allowing scientific evidence on the effectiveness of protected areas or economic evidence on their financial benefits, or the environmental and economic risks of inaction, to be heard and applied to our region."
