When a major employer changes or closes, the impact reaches far beyond the workplace. It affects families, local businesses and the economic fabric of an entire community.
The indefinite idling of the Howe Sound mill will directly affect approximately 400 workers, but the effects will be felt across the Sunshine Coast. The mill and the people who have worked there have contributed significant economic value to the Coast for generations.
The Sunshine Coast has always been home to skilled and resourceful people. Right now, our first responsibility is to recognize the uncertainty facing those affected and to support one another.
In the months ahead, people will make different decisions about what comes next. Some may pursue new employment or training, while others may eventually explore self-employment or business ownership. Some may simply need time to consider their options. Each person’s path will be different.
Navigating this transition will require a collective effort. Local governments, First Nations, economic development and training organizations, employers, financial institutions and the business community all have a role to play. Community Futures is one part of that broader response. We are available to listen, provide guidance and connect people with resources as they consider what comes next.
