Matthew Thomson creates expressive work rooted in observation and play—working primarily in oil landscape painting, with occasional pastel and watercolour studies that capture light, mood, and movement on the coast.⁠
⁠
Alongside his paintings, he also builds kinetic sculptures using wood and found objects, bringing discarded and natural materials into playful, moving forms. His current fascination is with push puppets, exploring humour, motion, and interaction in a hands-on way.⁠

Based in Gibsons, Matthew’s practice moves between painting and sculpture, always guided by curiosity and experimentation.⁠

Most people come here for the scenery. The Sun­shine Coast stretches roughly 180 kilo­metres from Howe Sound to Des­ol­a­tion Sound, a boat- or plane-access strip of main­land with island energy: rain­forest, sculp­ted shoreline, moun­tains at every angle... The nature is a given. What this week­end reveals is the other thing the Sun­shine Coast has in wild abund­ance: artists. The more art stu­dios I step into, the more I start quietly audi­tion­ing myself for a dif­fer­ent kind of life.
