SOBC-SC 2026 AGM & friendly softball game… just over a week way! Pop on out to our AGM and support a wonderful group (volunteer acknowledgement), and consider becoming part of our coordinating committee. ALSO, following the AGM, the SO Ravens will be playing a friendly softball game against the Ball Busters, women’s ball team, as they prepare for their July tournament. 🥎

From Athlete Representative, and Swim Athlete, Michael Oswald:

Gary Rogers was more than a swim coach. In my eyes he was the epitome of calm, caring and kindness.

Each week at practice, especially in my later 20's when I began swimming with Special O, Gary welcomed me. Despite difficulties or my temperament, he encouraged me to return each week.

Talking to him, quickly turned into a highlight of my week because he always had a smile on his sweet face and a chuckle that was infectious.

Bless you Gary Rogers and all your hard work, dedication and commitment. I speak as a member of The Orca swim team when I say Thank You and we'll miss you. All my love to Maeve and Stephanie in this trying time.

SC Special O is saddened by the passing of Coach Gary Rogers.
Gary was a long-time swim coach for many of our athletes who will remember him as a patient and kind mentor.
He was also a special coach to his daughter Stephanie, who under his guidance was able to attend and medal in many competitions including a silver and bronze at the World Games in Athens Greece in 2011.

Gary's efforts did not stop there but continued on for many years supporting many other athletes who have gone on to achieve competitive excellence, until his retirement this spring.

Our deepest condolences go out to his wife Maeve and daughter Stephanie.
Special Olympics Sunshine Coast will miss his presence in our community.
Gary has left a legacy we will always remember.

Thank you to our wonderful community for showing up again this year for the Annual Polar Plunge hosted by Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. Our local Sheriff's office and Phil Lacasse stepped up to coordinate it this year and was able to encourage a lot of Emergency Services personnel to participate. The Sunshine Coast Lions Club was on hand to support the event and share pizza donated by Freshslice Pizza. Prana Sauna was also on hand to help warm brave plungers. The Coast Reporter snapped pictures for a feature in the March 6th paper- thank you to Sandra Thomas for sharing her pictures! Donations continue to trickle in and the goal of $4000 is just on the horizon of being met. Additional thanks to Mike Oswald Athlete Reporter. Sechelt Volunteer Fire Department District of Sechelt. Thank you to Gibsons Curling Club for celebrating and, as always, supporting our Special Olympics athletes in honing their skills. As some athletes play games in preparation for curling regionals in Delta on Feb 21st, others are working on the basics of line, handle, and sweeping. Always fun out on the ice. February 2026 Spotlight on Special Olympics- Mike Oswald Athlete Reporter.
Saturday January 31st, Special Olympics Sunshine Coast and Tim Hortons in Gibsons had an afternoon full of delicious donuts and smiles. January 30th to February 1st Tim Hortons teams up with Special O across Canada and puts out a S.O. donut with all proceeds funding S.O. programs.
The staff of Tim Hortons in Gibsons were a huge help, chiefly Alice & Rick, the two managers who already had a table and balloons set up and whom were generous with their time. Oliver, the owner was also a great resource and took time to discuss next year’s event with our Public Relations Coordinator Helen Halet, who also set up posters and photo albums, detailing S.O.’s profound history here on the Coast.
Many athletes, including our curling team, coaches, committee members, friends and family showed up to buy a yummy donut, socialize and support this fantastic cause. Some even arrived displaying their medals won in fierce competition. Local Coordinator Randy Younghusband ensured a group photo was taken to commemorate the occasion.
I would like to say thanks to everybody who purchased one or 4 dozen, just know that you helped to put huge grins on not only your faces, but also athletes whose programs will receive much needed funds, especially in this time of upcoming National competition.
I’m definitely looking forward to next year!
