It was an inspiring day at Ch’ḵw’elhp IR 26, Gibson Creek, as the in-stream restoration work began, with the removal of the first large chunk of concrete wall, just below the culvert.
I'm posting to share our excitement and to remind community members that large, heavy machines will be operating on this site as the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw, Ministry of Transportation and Transit, and Sunshine Coast Conservation Association carry out the salmon habitat restoration work from August 10 to September 30.
As a partner in this project, the SCCA asks that folks PLEASE RESPECT THE REQUEST NOT TO ACCESS THE LAND AROUND THE CREEK while this work is taking place.
Under the Fisheries Act, our team has a short window to complete in-stream works to protect the fish.
Ducking under the fence on Marine Drive to access the path to the beach puts you, our team, and the project timeline at RISK. Please don't do that.
Please access the beach via the public park 150m down the road, at Armour's Beach.
Thank you for your patience and support as this important work moves forward!
Suzanne Senger, Executive Director, SCCA
