First Steps A multi-service home for pregnant and parenting young women The social benefits for mother and child are aimed directly at breaking the cycle of poverty.

First Steps provides a safe and healthy environment for pregnant and parenting young women and their children who have no safe place to live. As the only organization of our kind, we are partially funded by the Province of New Brunswick, serve all of Atlantic Canada, and are active partners in New Brunswick’s Poverty Reduction plan. Our programs and services support both pregnant and/or parenting young women and include mental health services, education, addiction services, childcare, and support programs. Young women are encouraged to further develop parenting skills, financial management, and complete their high school education or a training program. They are then given the opportunity to live in a subsidized apartment through a program called Second Steps.

Help Us Welcome Residents Into Our Second Steps Program! 🏡

We are so excited to share that several residents will soon be moving into their own apartments with their children as part of our Second Steps Program! As they take this important step toward independence and a fresh start, we are looking for donations to help furnish their new living spaces and make them feel like home.

Items we are currently looking for include:

TVs
Couches and coffee tables
Kitchen tables and chairs
Dressers
End tables and nightstands
Microwave
Small appliances and other household essentials

Delivery is preferred, but pick-up may be possible under special circumstances.

Together, we can help make these new beginnings a little brighter! 💜🏡

🧥 Long weekend = a great time to sort through the winter closet! ❄️

As you bring out those winter coats, and take a look at what you may have outgrown, no longer wear, or are ready to pass along.

💙 Remember Our Coat Drive is coming up on October 22, 2026!

If you have a clean, gently used winter coat that could keep someone warm this season, please consider setting it aside for donation. Every coat can make a difference to someone in our community.

So while you’re enjoying the long weekend, why not add a little winter closet sorting to the list? 🧥❤️

Anything Can Be a Paintbrush! 🌽🎨

Today, the infants discovered that painting doesn’t always require a traditional paintbrush! We explored painting with corn, using it to make different marks, patterns, and textures on our paper. The infants enjoyed grasping, dipping, pressing, and moving the corn through the paint while exploring what happened when they experimented in different ways.

This experience encouraged the infants to use their senses, creativity, curiosity, and developing fine-motor skills. They were able to explore materials in their own ways and discover that everyday objects can be used in unexpected ways.

NBCF Connection:
This experience supports Well-Being and Belonging, as infants were encouraged to explore in a safe and supportive environment. It also connects to Play and Exploration, as the children used curiosity, experimentation, and creativity to discover what the corn could do as a painting tool. Through hands-on exploration, the infants were building confidence as capable and curious learners💙

Last week, Natalia, one of our Second Steps Coordinators, had the pleasure of taking Jean on her first grocery shopping trip to help her get settled into her new second steps apartment. 🛒🏠❤️

Together, they worked on creating a grocery list, choosing the essentials, and making sure Jean had everything she needed to start feeling comfortable in her new home.

Starting a new chapter can be both exciting and overwhelming, and having someone there to provide support along the way can make all the difference. We’re so happy to be part of Jean’s journey and help her take these important steps towards settling into her new home. 💕✨
