First Steps

First Steps A multi-service home for pregnant and parenting young women The social benefits for mother and child are aimed directly at breaking the cycle of poverty.

First Steps provides a safe and healthy environment for pregnant and parenting young women and their children who have no safe place to live. As the only organization of our kind, we are partially funded by the Province of New Brunswick, serve all of Atlantic Canada, and are active partners in New Brunswick’s Poverty Reduction plan. Our programs and services support both pregnant and/or parenting

young women and include mental health services, education, addiction services, childcare, and support programs. Young women are encouraged to further develop parenting skills, financial management, and complete their high school education or a training program. They are then given the opportunity to live in a subsidized apartment through a program called Second Steps.

This weekend❤

And we’re back.

Are you ready for another Paw-Some Cardboard for Kitty Event?

Buckle up Saint John, because we are officially hosting the event again at Market Square Atrium on May 30th.

This year we have made some exciting updates. We have introduced a brand new category called Sustainable Snuggles, where builders create a beautiful cat home while incorporating recyclable materials.

We have also updated our registration terms. Participants can either pay the registration fee or bring a small to medium box of donations to support the cause.

This event is also part of the 17 by Seventeen initiative, contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals:
SDG 12 Responsible Consumption and Production
SDG 15 Life on Land
SDG 5 Gender Equality
SDG 3 Good Health and Well-Being

Today we proudly celebrate 24 incredible years of First Steps, a place of hope, support, and new beginnings for young mothers and their babies.

For nearly a quarter century, First Steps has provided a safe, caring, and non-judgemental home where young families can grow, learn, and build brighter futures together.

Along with a supportive home environment, we are proud to offer the Dr. Christine Davies Education Centre, helping young mothers continue their education. In addition to First Steps Early Learning Centre, where children receive loving care while their mothers complete their high school education.

We are also proud to offer our Second Steps program, which supports mothers as they transition toward independence. A supported subsidized apartment program allows families to continue to build strong, stable futures.

Thank you to our staff, volunteers, board of directors and community partners for helping First Steps thrive. To the women who took a chance by entering our program, we’re proud of the work you’ve done to create a lasting change for you, and your children.

As part of today’s celebration, we would also like to share a heartfelt letter from a residents who has recently transitioned into her own apartment.

A powerful reminder of the impact that support, compassion, and opportunity can have on a young family’s future.

Here’s to 24 years of changing lives, one family at a time. 🩷
