Ivy has been part of Clare Parker Homes’ Odd Jobs program for several years, helping with seasonal and weekly jobs at different homes across the organization.

She enjoys outdoor work most, especially when the weather is nice. From raking and shovelling to other yard tasks, Ivy likes staying active and contributing in ways that make a difference.

“I like working for the things I want to buy.”

For Ivy, work is also about earning her own money and being able to purchase things for herself. It gives her the chance to do work she enjoys while building independence through the responsibilities she takes on.

Greg works with Clare Parker Homes’ Odd Jobs program as part of a delivery team connected with Munches Catering.

For the past six months, he’s helped with picking up and dropping off food deliveries and sometimes setting up food tins along the way.

For Greg, the job gives him something in his week that he can take ownership of and look forward to. He says the work makes him feel good, and he enjoys being able to do things for himself while working alongside others.

Right now, Greg works one delivery shift each week, but he says he’d happily do the job every day.

Tristan works at a local grocery store, where he helps stock inventory, gather carts and take care of the tasks that keep his shift moving.

He knows his routine, understands what is expected of him and takes pride in doing his job well. While working with different support staff can sometimes mean having to explain his responsibilities again, Tristan is confident in what needs to get done and continues to build trust in what he can do.

“I like working, learning, and showing what I can do.”

For Tristan, employment means being part of a team, taking responsibility for his work and continuing to grow through new experiences on the job.

Max helps with reception and janitorial work at Clare Parker Homes, taking on responsibilities that have given her the chance to learn new things along the way.

Adjusting to a different work schedule has been one of the challenges, but Max says one of the things she appreciates most is knowing she has people around her who are willing to help.

“Everyone is here to help each other.”

For Max, work is an opportunity to keep learning, build confidence and be part of a supportive team.

Hayden works in office reception at Clare Parker Homes, where he helps with things like transferring calls, caring for office plants, copying documents and ordering supplies such as water and paper products.

His work has given him opportunities to take on different responsibilities and learn new things along the way. Hayden says some tasks can still be challenging, especially remembering names and transferring calls, but he also knows there are people around to help when he needs it.

“Doing things for myself and with others, I enjoy this the most.”

Hayden says he’s happy with how things are going and looks forward to continuing to learn and take on new challenges.

Today we’re recognizing Disability Employment Awareness Month by featuring Rayanne and the work she does at Clare Parker Homes. 💛

Rayanne takes on a variety of responsibilities in the office, from helping in the kitchen and handling outgoing mail to watering plants, restocking coffee and creamer, reading emails and taking phone messages.

She says the kitchen is one of her favourite parts of the job, and she’s also been learning new tasks along the way, like replacing soap dispensers and transferring documents from the computer to the printer.

For Rayanne, work is also about independence.

“I like that I can support myself more.”

Earning her own money gives her more freedom to make choices for herself and buy the things she wants, something she is proud of.

The ICAN Workshop is a peer support workshop for adults with intellectual disabilities and neurodivergence. It is a time for self-advocates to come together for a day of learning advocacy skills, sharing their experiences, and making friends.

💜Not a member of ICAN yet? No worries! If you're an adult with an intellectual disability or neurodivergence, we'd love to have you join the fun! It's okay if the workshop is your first time participating!

A few moments from our Gentle Teaching 2 training last Friday. 💙

One of the conversations throughout the day was about remembering that the people we support are whole people, with their own thoughts, emotions, preferences, boundaries and ways of communicating.

Support is not just about responding to behaviour. It is about looking deeper, understanding what someone may be trying to express, and continuing to build relationships rooted in trust, respect and safety.

Gentle Teaching gives us the opportunity to reflect on how we show up in those moments and how we can support people in a way that recognizes their individuality, dignity and humanity.

We’re grateful for another day of learning, conversation and growth together.

As the most recent addition to the Clare Parker house, Lana has brought her own warmth and personality to the CPH family. 💙

She’s active, curious, and always up for getting out and doing something, whether that’s swimming, stopping for a drink, or heading to the drop-in for crafts and activities.

Lana communicates in ways that are uniquely her own, through gestures, sounds, and the little cues that those around her come to understand more and more as they get to know her.

What stands out most is her loving and kind personality. As you spend more time with Lana, you begin to recognize the ways she expresses herself, what she enjoys, and the things that make her happiest.

This Heart of CPH story is a reminder that connection can look different for everyone, and that taking the time to truly get to know someone can mean so much.

Thank you, Lana, for bringing your warmth, kindness, and unique personality to the CPH family. 💙

The NTG Canadian Consortium is offering its Dementia Capable Support of Adults with Intellectual Disabilities & Dementia training, designed for professionals who support older adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities across disability services, health care, long-term care, and aging-related settings.

Participants can choose from two in-person training options:
