Let's dive into the world of stimming! Behind every behaviour, there's a reason. Understanding the reasons behind stimming is crucial for promoting acceptance and support.
So, what exactly is stimming? Stimming, short for self-stimulation, involves the repetition of physical movements, sounds, words, or moving objects. It can take various forms and engages multiple senses, including sight, taste, touch, hearing, smell, vestibular (balance), and proprioceptive (body awareness).

Why do people stim? In simple terms, stimming serves as a form of self-regulation. Individuals may stim to cope with overstimulation, understimulation, or to manage emotions.

When overstimulated, stimming can help block out excess sensory input. Conversely, when understimulated, stimming provides additional sensory input. It can also serve as a way to express or manage both positive and negative emotions.

How might a person stim? The possibilities are endless—full-body rocking or spinning, hand flapping, watching rotating objects, rubbing textures, smelling, head banging, bouncing, jumping, twirling, pacing, walking on tiptoes, vocalizations, pencil tapping, hair twirling, chewing on pens, and more. Stimming isn't just for neurodivergent individuals!

Remember, unless stimming poses harm, it should be embraced, not discouraged. Autonomous stimming should be integrated into all spaces!

Help ARC continue its mission of creating inclusive, sensory-friendly environments. You can support us by donating on our website and directing your donation to Facility Improvements for Better Service Delivery.
