Started in 2019 the farm specifically collects animals that were destined for meat and slaughter. With some exceptions (we couldn’t fit full size hogs so the potbelly pigs are representatives of the swine family, they are from a farm that no longer wanted them)
At the moment w

e have 2 goats, 2 sheep, 2 potbellies, and 2 rabbits. Our hope is that folks who meet and fall in love with them will be inspired to purchase plant-based meat and dairy alternatives rather than support animal cruelty and killing as our traditional food system does. But, your visit doesn’t need to include discussion on this topic unless it interests you...
Our sheep and goats are leash trained and enjoy regular outings to the beach, dog park, skate park, walks up and down the road, birthday parties... its always nice to have a helper when they go on adventures so let us know if you’d like to come along :)
Visits are free, we are privately funded, but if you’d like to donate a few dollars to the animal food piggy bank donations are gratefully accepted. There is no obligation or pressure to donate however. Hope to see you soon!

Sadly we announce the passing of Xavi this past week. I found him one morning unable to use his hind legs and turning in circles. It could have been a stroke or another ear infection....either way he was very unhappy and given that he was at the end of his life expectancy (his brother died last year) the vet and I thought euthanizing would be the best thing for him as there was no way to know if he'd recover and it seemed unlikely. He's already cheated death once with the ear infection he had 2 years ago - it took him 6 months to learn to stay upright again. I buried him next to Cruton in the bunny cemetery.

Wildlife rescue is hard, emotionally hard above all else, I took in this baby robin at 1 or 2 days old. Someone noticed a cat was about to get its nest. He/she thrived in care for over a week until one day the baby pigeon in the box next to his jumped out of its box and landed on the robin breaking both the robins legs :( I rushed him to the vet and he was double splinted. He did well for another 4 days but then declined and died. I don't often have animals in my care for that long...usually they transfer to the rehabilitation center after a few days. But this little one I had for 2 weeks and he had to be fed every 45 minutes dawn to dusk. I named the robin Smurf. I watched his eyes open for the first time. I watched Smurf grow his first feathers. I miss you Smurf, I wanted you to fly high in the sky one day. I'm sorry. I hope you are there now.

This painted turtle was run over and had a hole in its shell. It did a few weeks of recovery at Little Mittens Wildlife Rescue and came back to Nelson for release this week. Perhaps not as spectacular as the bald eagle release...but still a nice video of him going home :)

Today I released the bald eagle that came in with lead poisoning 3 months ago (the one that grabbed my leg). Little Mittens Wildlife rescue, who I volunteer for, sent it to OWL raptor rehab in Delta where it received treatment. Today OWL sent it back to the Trail airport where I collected it and brought it back to Nelson this evening to release it where it came from.

Vegas and Q-bert enjoying the yard. Today is one of those precious days where all the farm residents are doing well. But we also have a bald eagle with broken legs, a juvenile robin with broken wing, an orphaned robin hatchling who needs feeding every 20 minutes, and a robin egg (yes we take lost eggs and try to hatch them) receiving care on the farm today.

3 trips to Kelowna and $3000 but Hwin is ok! A few weeks ago a number of eggs (unshelled) escaped her reproductive tract into her abdomen. They created a large mass which crushed her other organs, she had trouble breathing and stopped eating. The solution was having her on a reduced light schedule - early to bed and late to wake up, force feeding for several weeks, and a hormone implant into her breast which will alter her hormones so she won't make more eggs this summer. Now that the implant has had time to take effect she is no longer on the reduced light schedule and is eating and breathing normally as her body very slowly reabsorbs the eggs in her abdomen. She'll need a fresh implant every spring.
