In the evenings from May 19th to 21st, Alyce Wickert and Trisha Hampton from RDN facilitated community engagement sessions in the hamlets of Vimy, Pickardville & Busby as part of Westlock County Our Hamlets, Our Future project. The purpose of the sessions was to gain insight from residents on topics, such as housing, business, facilities, programs and infrastructure, to assist Westlock County in the creation of Community Development Plans for these hamlets. RDN will be returning to these communities in the Fall to facilitate discussions on next steps.

Adequate housing is a fundamental right of everyone in Canada, yet many newcomers and racialized communities continue to face discrimination when searching for a place to live.

In March 2026, RDN delivered the second session of its WARM Training Series. We shared a 2025 report on Racial inequality in Canada’s housing market, showing that discriminatory landlord practices shape rental experiences, particularly for First Nations, Black, Arab, and Latin American communities. The report also found out that newcomer men with racialized accents were 267% more likely to face discrimination in their housing search, while newcomer single mothers were 563% more likely to be treated unfairly than child-free applicants.

Training participants emphasized the importance of community-level collaboration to address housing discrimination and create more inclusive communities.

📢RDN Releases 2025 Alberta Provincial Estimation Reports!

New data highlights continued trend: women, 2SLGBTQIA+, and Indigenous people disproportionately at risk of housing insecurity in rural Alberta.

Following the 2018, 2020, and 2023 provincial estimations conducted by communities across Alberta, RDN again partnered with communities across the province in 2025 to capture a comprehensive picture of rural, remote, and Indigenous housing insecurity. Data collection in October 2025 identified 1,762 survey respondents as housing insecure according to the national definitions of homelessness.

The top three reasons for housing insecurity across participating rural, remote, and Indigenous communities in Alberta were:
✔️High housing costs
✔️Health challenges
✔️Low vacancy rates
