Solar Alberta Established in 1991, Solar Alberta is a non-profit society driven to accelerate Alberta's transition to a just & sustainable energy future.

We work towards this mission by advocating, educating & serving as an industry and community hub for solar energy. Formed in 1991, Solar Alberta is a non-profit society that believes solar energy and solar-related technologies are key to a sustainable and just energy future in Alberta. As a robust community hub, our membership is made up of over 350 individuals and businesses from all over the province. Our focus is on educating the general public and solar industry professionals as well as advocating for solar energy and solar-related technologies. In 2014 and again in 2021, Solar Alberta received Alberta’s highest environmental honour by winning the Emerald Award in the coveted Community Group & Nonprofit Association category.

Lisa Vagi has volunteered with Solar Alberta since 2023 and has been on our Board of Directors since 2024. She recently purchased a net-zero townhouse in Blatchford.

Lisa also works as a Building Performance Engineer on Stantec’s Carbon Impact Team, where she helps clients reach their energy and emissions goals.

Starts tonight! There's still time to register for Solar PV Systems: Design & Modelling!

Want to learn about advances in PV technology, the economics of PV systems, and the PV industry in general? This 10-hour course, presented as a series of case studies with practical design examples, is intended for electricians, technicians, engineers, solar installers, and others with a basic understanding of electrical theory and electrical terminology. It focuses on grid-tied residential and commercial scale projects, typically under 1 MW.

This course runs 5 nights: Oct 20, 22, 27, 29 & Nov 3, from 7-9 p.m. ABT.

CTV News Edmonton recently interviewed Heather MacKenzie, Solar Alberta's Executive Director, for their article, Why renewables are being left out of Alberta’s data centre power plans.
"There are jurisdictions like Germany and Ireland that are going in the exact opposite direction. They’re saying, ‘Bring your own power, it must be renewables.’ So Alberta is basically going against that trend globally,” said Solar Alberta Executive Director Heather MacKenzie... MacKenzie calls the AESO’s proposal for the next phase of its Bring Your Own Generation (BYOG) process “short-sighted” considering how far battery storage systems have come. “You can simply require that batteries be combined with solar and wind and then you actually have the most reliable form of electricity because batteries can be turned on in a moment’s notice,” said MacKenzie."
