YMCA of Northern Alberta - Edmonton Igniting Potential in Edmonton
Non-profit fitness, child care, community programs & more.

The YMCA of Edmonton was instituted by an act of Legislature in 1907 three years after Edmonton became a city. The original building officially opened in 1908 and offered a swimming pool, employment bureau, education classes, bible study, a gymnasium, running track, and residence. It was started by a group of prominent Edmontonians like Alex Rutherford and John A. McDougall, who helped raise nearl

y $28,000 to begin construction of a YMCA building. The Edmonton YMCA has grown concurrently with the City of Edmonton, and they have mutually supported each other’s growth and development — the YMCA, through its programs and services, and the City through working with the Y on capital projects.

Thank you to everyone who participated in our Pride Potluck at Castle Downs Family YMCA today!

Before everyone dug in, we asked guests to “wear their colours” and share their favourite colour and why. That simple question ended up being such a fun connection point for us to learn about each other's values, personalities and share childhood memories.

We truly value moments like this where our community comes together to build connection, belonging, and make space for everyone.

Happy Pride, Y family. 🌈

Meet some of our team leading Edmonton's YMCA Youth Transitions Program (YTP)!

(Left to Right)

CALEB (Youth Support Worker)
Caleb is a Social Worker who has been with the Youth Transition Program for two years. When working with youth, Caleb enjoys incorporating play-based approaches, using games to build relationships and develop important life skills such as problem-solving, resilience, and learning to lose gracefully. Caleb is known for his humility and positive attitude—which, if you ask him, his undefeated record in Connect Four speaks for itself!

MIKE (YTP Supervisor)
Mike is the supervisor for the youth transitions program. He enjoys incorporating movement to help the youth build connections and learn life skills. Mike has an extensive background in basketball, but also enjoys other athletic activities such as hockey, and non-athletic activities like board games and cards. His favorite part of the Youth Transitions Program is the opportunity the program provides to foster strong connections with new people!

ISRAEL (Youth Support Worker)
Israel has a passion for supporting youth through mentorship, workshop, life skills development, and positive recreational activities. His favorite activities to do with youth include badminton, basketball, team-building games, and helping youth build confidence through community programs. Israel enjoys creating safe and supportive spaces where youth can grow, connect, and achieve their goals.

YMCA Youth Transitions Program is a free service focused on providing support to youth aged 13–19 who are facing barriers in their lives. These barriers could be related to school, employment, peers, family, housing or addictions.

Come connect with the YTP team at:

-Youth Drop-in Nights (Every Thursday, 3:30–6pm at Boyle Street Plaza)

-D&D and Boardgames (Every Friday, 4:30–6pm at Stanley A Milner Public Library)

It's Early Childhood Educator Appreciation Day! Thank you so much to all of the ECE's who are shaping our future through the lives of our children. We are so grateful for all you do.

05/09/2026

Every year on the third Friday in May, the Association of Early Childhood Educators of Alberta (AECEA) celebrates Early Childhood Educator (ECE) Day. If your family has been positively impacted by an ECE we would like you to encourage you to show your appreciation on May 15, 2026. A heartfelt note or card expressing your appreciation would mean a lot to the ECE's who care for your children.

This April, our Y community came together with one goal: provide a YMCA experience for 250 families across Northern Alberta. Through fundraising events in our health, fitness and aquatics centres and child care spaces, including walks, pool parties, and fitness classes, we reached that goal!

Because of your collective support, 250 families will access life-changing Y experiences this year, from swimming lessons and recreation to vital community services. As we look ahead to summer, the impact continues. Soon we will be welcoming thousands of young people to YMCA day camps for experiences that build skills, connection, and confidence that lasts a lifetime.

Right now is an especially meaningful time to give because donations made until August 31, 2026 will be matched up to 50% through Rogers Birdies for Kids presented by AltaLink.

Ninah started as a volunteer, and has since become a staff member providing our members with fitness support in various roles at Jamie Platz Family YMCA. She became passionate about supporting the Y when she discovered that we are more than just a fitness facility, but a community-focused organization that offers life-changing opportunities to kids in our community.
