The YMCA of Edmonton was instituted by an act of Legislature in 1907 three years after Edmonton became a city. The original building officially opened in 1908 and offered a swimming pool, employment bureau, education classes, bible study, a gymnasium, running track, and residence. It was started by a group of prominent Edmontonians like Alex Rutherford and John A. McDougall, who helped raise nearly $28,000 to begin construction of a YMCA building. The Edmonton YMCA has grown concurrently with the City of Edmonton, and they have mutually supported each other’s growth and development — the YMCA, through its programs and services, and the City through working with the Y on capital projects.

In 2012, longtime YMCA supporter Don Patterson cycled 7,232 km from Vancouver to St. John's, raising awareness about the importance of keeping kids active and supporting YMCA programs.
Now, Don is inviting you to take on your own cycling challenge!

We’re halfway through our Oilers Fan Park day camp adventures!

Through our partnership with the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation, kids from YMCA programs have been heading downtown for activity-packed days filled with hockey skills, games, and some special guests along the way. Campers have even had the chance to meet NHL alumni, including Chris Dingman and Chris Joseph.

By the end of the month, up to 1,500 kids will have the opportunity to take part. Experiences like these give kids a chance to try something new, build confidence, make friends, and create summer memories together.

We believe every kid deserves the chance to participate. This summer, our goal is to help send 600 kids to YMCA summer camp by removing financial barriers for families who need support.

This summer, the YMCA of Northern Alberta and the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation are teaming up to welcome up to 1,500 kids from YMCA child cares, summer day camps, and youth programs to Fan Park @ ICE District!

Kids will spend an action-packed day building hockey skills, playing games, touring Rogers Place, and meeting Hunter and former Edmonton Oilers.
Together, we believe every child deserves the chance to participate, stay active, make friends, and create unforgettable memories. Partnerships like this help make special experiences possible as the YMCA works toward its goal of sending 600 kids in need to summer camp this year.

National Drowning Prevention Week occurs every year in mid-July, when Canada's drowning rate is at its highest. We're dedicated to creating safe spaces where everyone belongs. For our aquatics teams, this means offering support and education regardless of age or experience.

A huge thank you to award-winning chocolatier, Brett Roy, from Sweet Lollapalooza Fine Chocolates for treating Don Wheaton Family YMCA's day campers to a live chocolate-making demonstration and tour of Sweet Lollapalooza! We are so grateful to have such excellent neighbours in our downtown Edmonton community!

Kickstand Edmonton offers employment services for youth in Edmonton. And now, with the help of the Alberta Construction Training Institute (ACTI), we're able to include VR simulation training for certifications like Fire Watch. Thank you, ACTI, for your generous support in helping us offer accessible certification training to youth in our community, and to the Carthy Foundation for funding Kickstand Edmonton's Employment Services.
