Opening Reception: Thursday, September 3, 7–9 pm

With meticulous ink techniques, including pointillism, John Hood creates striking images that explore the human figure and the shadows—literal and otherwise—that accompany human experience. His work invites close looking and reflection, at times provocative and challenging, at others deeply relatable. The Shadow Series: One Man’s Reflection considers the complexities, contradictions and experiences that shape how we see ourselves and one another.

Mycelium: We are all connected

Opening Reception: Saturday, September 5, 2–4 p.m.

Inspired by the hidden fungal networks that connect and sustain entire ecosystems, Mycelium: We are all connected brings together work in a range of mediums by CVAC member artists exploring connection, resilience, care and renewal. From relationships and community to the natural systems that surround us, the exhibition considers the visible and invisible threads that link us to one another and to the world we share.

Nominations are now open for the 2026 City of Duncan Arts Award, celebrating the people whose creativity, commitment and contributions make a difference in the Cowichan Valley arts community.

The award recognizes excellence in the performing, literary or visual arts; contributions to arts education; significant volunteer service supporting local artists or arts organizations; or outstanding promise and commitment to our arts community.

Anyone who lives in the Cowichan Valley can be nominated.

CVAC is pleased to facilitate the nomination process on behalf of the City of Duncan.

→ NOMINATION DEADLINE: SEPTEMBER 15, 2026

To nominate someone, complete the nomination form and tell us why you think they should receive the 2026 Arts Award.

The successful recipient will be honoured at the City of Duncan's Community Appreciation Night on November 9.

Meet the Photographer: Richard Schick

What is it like to stand on one of Canada's most remote islands, surrounded by the wild horses you've dreamed of seeing since childhood?

Join photographer Richard Schick in the CVAC Annex Gallery to hear the stories behind Wild Horses of Sable Island. Rick will share his experience travelling to a protected place that few people ever have the opportunity to visit, as well as what it was like to finally encounter and photograph the wild horses that had fascinated him since elementary school.

He'll take us behind the images, sharing his photographic process and those fleeting moments when subject, light, movement and timing come together. Rick will bring along additional prints from his journey that aren't included in the exhibition.

Come see Wild Horses of Sable Island, meet the photographer behind the images, and hear the story of a childhood dream realized.
