Late night (or early morning) update on these two little twinsie babies. It can be really hard to determine the age of a malnourished street kitten. They are often underdeveloped but the teeth and eye colour is usually what tells you. These girls are 308 grams and 380 grams. Based on average weight per age that would be aprox the size of a 3-4 week old kitten. But these babies have all of their teeth and their eye colour is almost fully changed from baby blues to their adult colour. This would put them closer to 6 weeks old. They are very thin with big pot bellies which makes them walk like a younger kitten but I'm sure they're older than they look. They're just so malnourished that their development is significantly delayed. The good news is that with good nutrition and parasite treatment they will catch up to their milestones and develop into typical adult cats. But we really did get these girls just in time. They can go downhill so fast when they're this young and not getting the nutrients they need. We will be working very hard to get mom and siblings into care in the next couple days.

Here's a sneak peek at what we're up to this evening. These babies are tiny! Probably not even 500 grams. They were hungry enough to come out in the rain which is not the usual behavior for cats or kittens unless they are starving. There are still at least three more kittens and the mom to catch. Unfortunately mom was nearby when I caught these two so she's being extra cautious now. Sometimes you just have to make that judgment call though. These two were under my drop trap and I knew they were going to leave soon so I made the choice to catch them not knowing for sure if mom or other siblings were watching. These babies are so tiny and malnourished that I had to take that chance because they are at extreme risk outside. We will keep working to get the rest of the family as soon as possible but at least we know that these two girls will be safe and warm tonight.

Another mom and her 4 babies safe in care. It took more than an hour of digging through bags and boxes in a storage area to get to these babies but mom walked right into my trap within minutes once her babies were secured. The babies are about 14 days old and are nice and chubby. Mom has done a very good looking after them and made sure they were not easy to get at. She can relax now though and just focus on eating, sleeping, and baby care. No more having to be on high alert all the time.
We have several nursing moms in care right now and could really use some help with feeding them high quality kibble. It's essential that they have access to high quality kibble all day so they can free feed as much as they want. It takes a lot of calories to nurse a litter of kittens!

We've added Purina Proplan kitten kibble for our mom cats to our Amazon wish list,

Mumpford was a rock star today for his surgery! Everything went really well and he's recovering on some good strong pain meds. He's still seeing a few purple elephants because of the meds but he ate some dinner and had a big drink of water when he got home so we know he's feeling good.
Mumpford is a good example of how awful life can be for a tomcat and how misunderstood they are. He lived with such awful pain for so long that the muscles in his bad leg contracted and withered from lack of use. He was likely someones pet when he was a cute kitten but the novelty wore off and he was left to fend for himself. This meant year after year of fighting, surviving injuries and infections, and scrounging for food to survive, after being failed by the humans who probably once loved him. Despite all that, Mumpford just wants his ears scritched and his licky treats.
We are very grateful to everyone who helps us to help cats like Mumpford and for the very generous donations that came in today that will help to cover almost half his bill from today! ❤️🐾

MUMPFORD NEEDS YOUR HELP ❤️🐾
Our boy Mumpford is at the vet today for his big amputation surgery. His right hind leg has been non functional for so long that the muscles have contracted to the point that he couldn't even straighten it out if he wanted to. This means that he won't really need to adapt to it being gone because he hasn't used it for so long anyway. This also means that the constant pain will be gone. So once he's recovered from his surgery he'll be a whole new cat that can enjoy life again. There is still a chance that he has osteosarcoma in that leg but because there is no indication that a cancer has spread and because cats actually have a good chance of surviving this type of cancer once the affected limb is removed, we decided to give this old man the chance to enjoy some happy and comfortable golden years. Osteosarcoma is a rare cancer in cats so there is also a chance that it's a septic arthritis, or something else, and removing the leg will also resolve either of those issues. Either way, we think Mumpford deserves this chance. We could really use your help to give this sweet old man with the most glorious cheeks, who has lived in pain on the streets for too long, the fabulous retirement life that he deserves.

E transfer donations are gratefully accepted at any time at [email protected]

Direct payment donations can be made to Kinsol Vet Clinic in the clinic or over the phone at 250 929 5888

It's only Tuesday and we've already had three moms and 13 kittens come through our care this week. Including this beautiful batch of mini house panthers in training, and their mom's. Thank you to Auntie Willi for helping to get them to their destination safely with your fabulous air conditioning! The AC in the Catmobile has stopped working and it's such a vital thing to have this time of year so we will be dealing with that asap!

Trapping by the light of the moon last night!
This little family came into our care after a midnight trapping session under an almost full moon. The babies are thin and malnourished but mom was doing her absolute best to keep them fed. Thanks to my fabulous neighbours at the Lakes Road Tree Farm who spotted them at the back of their acreage and contacted us right away, this family will now be okay and won't ever have to worry about where their next meal will come from ever again.
They are already settled in safely with another rescue and will get all the care they need to thrive and we can go right back out for the next ones!
