It was a beautiful day to take part in COVE Demo Day! Our students attending the H2O Conference spent the day at the waterfront today continuing their exploration of career opportunities in the ocean sector.

For those unfamiliar with the event, COVE Demo Day showcases the latest advancements in ocean technology, featuring demonstrations from some of the world's leading marine technology innovators.

A special thank you to the Ocean Technology Council of Nova Scotia (OTCNS) and the Centre for Ocean Ventures & Entrepreneurship (COVE) for providing such an engaging and inspiring experience for the students.

What an incredible day at the H2O Conference!

Yesterday, our team joined 24 students from eight schools across Nova Scotia for a hands-on look at careers in the ocean sector. Students attended conference sessions, built and tested paper model ships in an exciting design challenge led by Irving Shipbuilding, and competed for awards like Best Engineering, Strongest Design, and Best Teamwork.

Students had the opportunity to try a welding simulator, explored model ships, suited up in real welding gear, and connected with apprenticeship specialists to learn more about ocean-focused careers.

A huge thank you to the Ocean Technology Council of Nova Scotia (OTCNS) and Irving Shipbuilding Inc. for making this experience possible!

From our competitions to careers in marine trades! ⚓🔨

With the Skills Canada National Competition now wrapped, our new Discover Marine Trades program is spotlighting past competitors now building careers in shipbuilding. Today, we’re featuring Megan, who competed in the provincial welding competition this past year.

Megan's next step is heading back to school this fall to complete her Red Seal. Now three years into a career in shipbuilding, Megan says the most rewarding part of the role is watching quality welding transform steel, piece by piece. From a single unit to a mega-block and ultimately into a ship built for Canadians. 🇨🇦

Their advice to future competitors:

“Be proud of yourself for having the drive to put yourself out there. It takes strength and courage to step up and compete as an apprentice.”
